Police believe a Moroccan asylum seeker charged with murdering a pensioner in Hartlepool was motivated by terrorism, a court has heard.
Ahmed Ali Alid, 44, is accused of stabbing to death Terence Carney, 70, in the early hours of Sunday morning and also attempting to murder fellow asylum seeker, Javed Nouri, at the hostel where he was living.

(JNS) For several hours this week, the BBC, The New York Times, The Financial Times and other prominent mainstream media outlets claimed that Israel had bombed and destroyed Gaza City’s Al-Ahli hospital, killing hundreds of patients and staff.
This was a lie. A Palestinian Arab rocket fired at Israel intended to murder Israeli civilians had misfired and fallen into the hospital’s parking lot, causing an explosion and killing an as-yet-unknown number of people.
The lie, however, immediately ignited the Arab tinderbox. Mobs attacked American and Israeli embassies across the region.

In the coming days, Israel may launch a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip in response to the shocking pogrom carried out against Israelis on Oct. 7. The looming operation has led many to search for precedents in military history. There is one recent urban conflagration with great relevance to the impending assault on Gaza that, though unlikely to provide comfort to anyone, may offer some historical grounding. It cannot be overstated how important American Jewish culture has been to modern American life. American Jews helped shape their nation’s psyche. People who celebrate the massacre of Jewish infants are virulent antisemites. Hamas apologists, including academics, students, labour union leaders and assorted leftists are useful idiots in thrall to a postmodern ideology that demonizes and delegitimizes the Jewish state.
The federal government is warning Canadians to avoid all travel to Lebanon and telling those already in the country to leave now, as the crisis in Israel and Gaza worsens and concerns grow that the conflict could spill over the border.
For now, tensions between the Israeli military and Hezbollah — a political party and armed movement in Lebanon which supports the Palestinian militant factions Hamas and Islamic Jihad, all of which are backed by the Iranian regime — have been limited to exchanges of artillery fire and rocket attacks in border regions.
Diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent any further escalation, though the Israeli Defence Forces have already evacuated communities near the border with Lebanon, and Hezbollah has warned it’s “fully ready” to intervene in the Israel-Hamas war.

But there was no sign of her parents, nor of her sister, her sister’s husband, their daughter aged three and son aged eight, nor of an aunt and her 12-year-old daughter, nor of another aunt and an uncle. Ten members of the family were gone. Hours later, one of her father’s friends got through to his mobile. It was answered by someone shouting in Arabic: ‘Hostage! Hostage! Gilad Shalit! Gaza!’

Most of the Arabs who are now condemning Israel for its military strikes against the Iran-backed Hamas terrorist group in the Gaza Strip have never uttered a word against Hamas’s rocket attacks on Israel. These Arabs, who are now weeping over the plight of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, chose to turn a blind eye to Hamas’s repressive measures against the residents of the Gaza Strip. They also chose to look the other way as Hamas accumulated an arsenal of weapons and built dozens of offensive tunnels along the border with Israel. Incredibly, most of these Arabs still have not denounced Hamas for initiating the war on October 7, when hundreds of its heavily armed members crossed into Israel and massacred more than 1,400 Israelis, wounded thousands more, and abducted more than 200 hostages who were taken to Gaza.
While it’s hard to imagine in today’s context — the fifth and bloodiest Gaza war between Israel and Hamas in the past four decades — Israel actually encouraged the creation of Hamas, leading up to its founding in 1987.
Canadians were horrified as the carnage and bloodshed were unfolding in Israel during the unprecedented terrorist attack by Hamas was unfolding. The horror turned to outrage for many when the social media account for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) local 3906 cheered on the attack, saying “Palestine is rising, long live the resistance!”
CUPE 3906 represents staff and faculty members at McMaster University. The university quickly released a statement distancing itself from its own union.
