How did you spend America’s 250th birthday? New York’s socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, spent it lecturing America about racism and xenophobia while his wife attended an Islamic “spiritual wellness” retreat.
It was another reminder of the ugly rise of socialism in America.
Last Tuesday, Canadian author, documentarian and activist Naomi Klein admitted on Bluesky that she “truly f—ked up” for not doing her “due diligence” on Graham Platner, who recently won the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Maine, before she praised him as an “ extraordinary political communicator ” in March.
Klein’s apology followed last Monday’s publication of Politico’s interview with Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old woman who accused Platner of forcing her to have sex with him five years ago, after she objected.
But last Monday wasn’t the first time Platner’s sexual impropriety made the news.
The midnight arrest of Venezuelan Socialist dictator and drug kingpin Nicolás Maduro by U.S. Special Forces last Jan. 3 was supposed to open the way for a transition to political and economic normality in Venezuela. His vice-president, Delcy Rodriguez, would work closely with the Trump administration towards holding new elections, restoring legal guarantees, and disconnecting the regime from drug cartels, Cuba, China, Russia, and Iran.

How worried should Democrats be about the Democratic Socialists of America? In the wake of a series of DSA victories in New York City, Jonathan Chait raised the alarm in The Atlantic, writing that as the group has risen in power, it has also grown “more hostile to the [Democratic] party, more illiberal, and more dogmatic.” Long-time DSA members, including former staff member and thought leader David Duhalde and socialist magazine publisher Nathan J. Robinson, pushed back, dismissing Chait as someone who doesn’t know or understand the DSA.
35 years after the fall of the USSR the first official Communist DSA member, who admired Stalin, will likely be headed to Congress for the next term, in defiance of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment and the Communist Control Act. But who is out there voting for Communists?
Despite the countless millions dead at the hands of the Communist regimes, a significant portion of the electorate has a positive view of Communism as a political movement.
It seems unwise to dismiss the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and their candidates. They have made it very clear they intend to dismantle not only America, but Western civilization, and they’re spelling out exactly how they plan to do it.
Socialist political leaders have recently made substantial gains in the American political system, especially in urban areas and cities like New York, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Burlington (Vermont), South Fulton (Georgia), Cheektowoga (New York), Richmond (California), Allegheny County (Pennsylvania), and in congressional districts in New York, Colorado, and elsewhere following in the footsteps of New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, who some speculate will run for the White House in 2028.
Aweek before the 250th anniversary of America declaring independence, more than 1,000 people assembled at the nation’s capital to make a declaration of their own: their vision to dismantle America’s founding institutions. “All of US Next250 National Mobilization” protested the Trump administration, debuted new “founding documents,” and re-envisioned America as seen by Marxist revolutionaries.
“It’s not just a day, it’s a movement, and it’s been three years in the making,” Saru Jayarman, a co-organizer of Next250, told The Federalist. “This is the time to set the tone for what the next 250 years will be.”
Roger Kimball wrote, “Why socialism will fail,” a pretty nifty if overly intellectualized piece that encapsulates the common smug capitalist prediction of doom because “sooner or later you run out of other people’s money.”
Hahaha, right?
Really? Well, Congress ran out of other people’s money in the 1980s. We have a national debt approaching $40 trillion—$40 million million. Maybe we’re the socialists but we just won’t admit it.
As the Nazis took over Germany, they were a minority party that no one really took all that seriously. Hitler was crazy, but his ramblings weren’t thought of by most Germans or the political establishment as foreshadowing. People today forget they were not a majority, as history tends to obscure reality for the sensational. Communists in Russia and China (or anywhere they destroyed, really) were a minority, too. But you should never underestimate the ability of a distinct minority to bring about massive devastation, as once radicals gain power they tend to wipe out their opposition and move quickly to consolidate control. That’s what makes the lack of comment from “leaders” on the left about the goose-steppers taking over so curious.
Commies are taking over the Democrat party!
You might think that was a charge leveled by some rightwing reactionary who somehow confused socialism with communism. Instead it was the morbid fear expressed by longtime liberal Jonathan Chait in Wednesday’s Atlantic magazine, “There’s Nothing Democratic About These Socialists.”
So panicked was Chait at the specter of communism taking over his beloved Democrat party that he did not just mention it in passing. In fact, the C-word was invoked eleven times in Chait’s article in which he accuses the Democratic Socialists of America of being the parasitic pathway for injecting communism into its host party.
Who are the so-called Democratic Socialists of America and their fellow travelers?
While it is difficult to generalize, many current and would-be socialist officeholders share several common traits.
Most of them represent a relatively small slice of American life. Almost all are urban, with little knowledge of small-town or rural existence.
Is Canada ready to surf a socialist wave? After the shock victories of three hard-left candidates in last week’s U.S. Democratic primaries, voters and their leaders may wonder whether our country could elect the likes of “democratic socialists” Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander and Claire Valdez. Chevalier is particularly radical: in a since-deleted X post she wrote “I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me.” She also called for abolishing borders and founded an anti-Israel organization at Columbia University that demanded “the total eradication of Western civilization.”
After the Democratic primaries in New York last week, the Big Apple is looking a little more red. The Democratic Socialists of America, a rising faction within leftist politics, had a particularly good night.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, a radical’s radical in the DSA, unseated five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th Congressional District. Brad Lander beat incumbent Dan Goldman for the 10th District’s nomination, and DSA member Claire Valdez won the nomination for an open seat in the 7th District. Each also had the endorsement of Islamo-Marxist Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
