As Canadians enter year three of COVID-19, a significant proportion appear apprehensive about returning to mass public transit and other pre-pandemic “normal” activities.
A new Leger poll for Postmedia, conducted just as Omicron was beginning its ascent and before cases began skyrocketing, sought to assess people’s comfort levels for increased contact with other humans.
Unprecedented levels of COVID-19 across Canada are driving hospitalizations as well and once again threatening many provincial health-care systems.
Yet experts say it’s too soon to say how much hospitalizations could grow in the days and weeks to come. With testing capacity at its breaking point and data still coming in on Omicron’s severity, they say modelling this latest wave will require updating their methodology.
“We’re flying blind,” said Caroline Colijn, a mathematics professor at Simon Fraser University who has been modelling the pandemic in British Columbia.

…. Going forward the Ford government has indicated that it will only provide publicly-funded PCR testing to certain high-risk individuals in a bid to ensure that those who need a test the most can get timely access to one.
That, however, will mean that the daily case counts will no longer be a reflection of community spread in the weeks to come.
“I don’t think we’ll have any real idea of the true community burden,” infectious disease specialist Dr. Isaac Bogoch conceded during an interview with CP24 on Friday. “We will be in the dark in terms of knowing what the true burden of infection is in the community.”

Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s chief medical officer, said that line more than once during his Thursday press conference.
And what a pivot it turned out to be. The province has made radical changes to some of the ways COVID-19 is being managed.

Canada’s WestJet Airlines will cancel 15% of scheduled flights in January because the rapidly spreading Omicron variant of COVID-19 has left the airline unable to fully staff its operations, the company said on Thursday.

Quebec is once again imposing a curfew in an effort to curb the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant, as well as closing restaurant dining rooms, delaying the reopening of schools and closing non-essential businesses on Sundays.
After being AWOL since before the holiday break, Ontario Premier Doug Ford emerged on Dec. 28 to let everyone know a decision might be made soonish. That is nowhere near good enough. The return to school, at least in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, is Jan. 3. People needed time to get organized, and prepare mentally for whatever would be coming, even if we didn’t know all the details of what that was. We have enough stress dealing with the stuff we know about, there is no excuse to add to the anxiety by leaving millions of us, including the kids, to spin our wheels.

And then for the Health Department to come out and say the new variant has all the side effects of the vaccine reactions we’re currently seeing now. The Biden administration and the mainstream media have been pushing a mandate of the experimental COVID vaccines for the American people. Their talking point is that “COVID vaccines are effective and work against the pandemic.” That’s not true.
I have been following the “U.K. vaccine surveillance report” since last September and have seen enough evidence about the real efficacy of the COVID vaccines to show that they’re not as good as advertised.
Ontario is updating its COVID-19 testing requirements and cutting the isolation period from 10 to five days for fully vaccinated residents, while also limiting publicly-funded tests to high-risk individuals only.
On Thursday, Ontario’s top doctor announced an update to the province’s testing and isolation guidance amid record-high cases counts due to the rapidly spreading Omicron variant.
Beginning on Friday, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests offered by the province will only be available for high-risk individuals who are symptomatic and/or at risk of severe illness from the coronavirus, instead of being widely available to anyone looking for a test.
A pandemic that disproportionately kills the elderly is undeniably bad, but just as tragic is a response that disproportionately kills the young. As time goes on, the latter is claiming more and more Canadian lives.
Owing to reports of deaths and other ‘adverse health events’ triggered by vaccines produced by a handful of pharmaceutical giants, most notably Pfizer and Moderna, South Koreans are taking to the streets to protest their governments’ refusal to acknowledge thousands of deaths that many believe were caused by vaccines.

TORONTO — Ontario will push back the return to school to Wednesday, according to a senior government source.
Classes were set to resume as early as Monday in much of the province, but critics called for clarity on the back-to-school plan in light of the spike in COVID-19 cases.
The last call inspectors will be out on New Year’s Eve.
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), which is responsible for enforcing booze rules at bars and restaurants, is sending out a team of compliance officials Friday night to ensure COVID-19 public health requirements are followed.
