First Uyghur refugee arrives under Canadian effort to resettle persecuted minority groups from China

A Uyghur woman is the first refugee from China’s persecuted minority groups to arrive in Canada under a federal government resettlement effort launched in 2023.

The Canadian government has committed to bring in Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities who have fled repression in China. This follows from a February, 2023, vote in the House of Commons where MPs voted unanimously in favour of Motion M-62, which called on Ottawa to accept 10,000 Uyghurs and other minorities, and a February, 2021, vote where MPs also backed a declaration that Beijing’s treatment of these people amounted to genocide.

In an effort to create a cutting edge force, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has spent billions of dollars expanding and modernizing its armed forces at a pace rarely seen in peace time. But on the evidence of the last few days, the most cutting edge features of its top ranks remain corruption and political intrigue.

Miao Hua, one of China’s top commanders has been suspended and is under investigation for “serious violations of discipline” — CCP-speak for corruption, according to the defense ministry. Miao, a navy admiral, is one of six members of the party’s powerful central military commission, chaired by President Xi Jinping. He was also head of the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) political works department — charged with ensuring CCP control over the PLA. In the military pecking order, he was regarded as more powerful than defense minister Dong Jun. The graft allegations against him will have shaken China’s military leadership.

New survey finds young Canadians most supportive of China’s Communist Party government, least concerned about foreign interference

Young Canadians are the most supportive of China’s Communist government and are the most concerned that reports of Chinese government interference could lead to anti-Asian racism, according to a new report.

The survey, conducted by the not-for-profit Digital Public Square and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy’s China Governance Lab, also revealed that young Canadians are the least satisfied with Canadian democracy and are less confident in their ability to express controversial political views freely compared to other age groups.

Chinese phone hackers ‘had access to every call in the US’

A Chinese hacking operation that tapped into the US phone network was far more extensive than first reported and could have listened into virtually any mobile phone conversation in the country, according to accounts.

The Salt Typhoon hackers group, named by the Microsoft engineers who first encountered it in the summer, was initially reported to have targeted the phones of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance, as well as Kamala Harris’s campaign workers.

Chinese ship under investigation over ‘sabotaged’ Baltic undersea cables

Swedish investigators are looking into the movements of a Chinese vessel in the Baltic Sea after two internet cables were severed, in what some Western leaders suspect was an act of sabotage.

The Yi Peng 3, a Chinese-registered bulk carrier passed close to Swedish-Lithuanian and Finnish-German cables at the time both were mysteriously damaged on Sunday and Monday, according to ship tracking data.

Sweden is now “taking a hard look” at Yi Peng 3 and the role it might have played in both incidents, a source familiar with the investigation told the Financial Times.

China: At least 8 killed in mass stabbing in Wuxi

A stabbing spree in China’s eastern city of Wuxi left eight people dead on Saturday, police said in a statement. Another 17 were injured.

The authorities identified the suspect as a 21-year-old student.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on Mexico to match trade tariffs on Chinese imports and says Canada and the United States should consider striking their own bilateral free trade deal if that doesn’t happen.

The Premier’s missive at Mexico comes after Donald Trump won the U.S. presidency with a promise to reopen the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement when it is up for review in 2026. The USMCA replaced the North America free-trade agreement and came into effect in 2020.
