Millionaire conwoman, 57, is accused of bilking US Army out of over $100 MILLION

A millionaire conwoman has been accused of swindling the US Army out of $100million over six years by putting cash into her fake military youth business and splurging it on 31 homes and more than 70 supercars and motorcycles.

Janet Yamanaka Mello, 57, allegedly took military funds and spent millions of dollars on jewelry, clothing, luxury vehicles and real estate in one of the biggest fraud cases the military has ever dealt with.

Mello worked for the US Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas as a CYS Financial Program Manager.

Toronto budget chief warns of 16 per cent tax hike without Ottawa’s help on refugees

Torontonians could face a property tax hike as high as 16.5 per cent if the federal government doesn’t come through with the city’s demand for funding to house refugees claimants, budget chief Shelley Carroll warned Wednesday morning at a press conference.

“That is the potential crisis we face…we don’t have the funds,” said Carroll, speaking before the 2024 budget proposed by city staff was presented to council’s budget committee.

Carroll added that it was now on the federal government to respond and Toronto residents would need to speak up in the next few weeks.

Black box recorder from imperiled Alaska Airlines flight completely erased: ‘we have nothing’

Investigators seeking answers about what caused an Alaska Airlines plane’s near-catastrophic midflight blowout on Jan. 5 are working without a key piece of evidence: audio from the flight’s black box cockpit voice recorder.

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said at a press conference the in-flight audio of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, which was carrying 171 passengers, had been lost amid the chaos of making an emergency landing at Portland International Airport in Oregon 35 minutes into its journey.

Iranian student, denied permit to study in Canada, disputes security danger label

OTTAWA – An Iranian man is challenging the federal government’s decision to deny him a permit to study at a Montreal university because he is considered a danger to the security of Canada.

A lawyer for Reza Jahantigh says his client was distraught upon learning of the refusal and will seek judicial review in Federal Court.

The Immigration Department’s decision last month is the latest indication Ottawa is tightening restrictions on academics deemed to pose a national security risk.

Why is he even granted an appeal?
