Finnish Prosecutor Takes MP to Supreme Court for Tweeting Bible Verses

Despite having been acquitted of hate speech twice, Finnish MP Päivi Räsänen may still have to face another day in court on the same charges.

The Finnish public prosecutor has appealed the case to the country’s supreme court.

Räsänen, who has been a member of parliament since 1995 and also served as minister of the interior from 2011 to 2015, was formally charged with “agitation against a minority group” in 2021 under a section of the Finnish criminal code titled “war crimes and crimes against humanity”.

Ukrainian officials say year-long delay in delivery of air defence promised by Canada has come with a high price

Too many Ukrainians have died in the year since Canada announced the “high-priority donation” of an advanced air-defence system to Ukraine that has yet to be delivered, the secretary of country’s National Security and Defence Council said Tuesday.

Oleksiy Danilov told The Globe and Mail that his own nephew, killed near the front line on Jan. 8, was among those who had died in the 53 weeks since Canada promised to purchase a US$406-million National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, or NASAMS, on Ukraine’s behalf. While the reasons for the delay may make sense in Ottawa, the wait for the U.S.-made equipment is harder to understand for those facing daily Russian missile attacks.

Mexican woman arrested in wedding dress over alleged extortion of chicken farmers

A Mexican bride appeared for a police mugshot in her wedding dress after being arrested for alleged extortion of chicken farmers in along with her new husband.

Pictures of the bride, named as Nancy N, showed her handcuffed and flanked by machine gun-toting officers, having been detained during her nuptials amid a major police operation late last month.

California Targets, Walmarts Lock Up Underwear to Curb Shoplifting

Two major retailers in California’s Bay Area are putting socks and underwear under lock and key in an effort to deter shoplifters.

A Target store in Richmond and another in Pleasant Hill are locking up their items, NBC Bay Area reported Thursday. The outlet also noted that customers are being forced to wait quite some time for employees to retrieve the merchandise from the cases.

Highgate Cemetery is set to charge upwards of £25,000 for burial spots next to Karl Marx’s grave.

The north London graveyard, a popular tourist spot for fans of the communist pioneer, will erect new graves after securing £100,000 of National Lottery funding to help its conservation work and landscaping.

The site, which already has roughly 53,000 burial spots, will now make space near the tomb of Marx – a spot particularly coveted by communists.

The consortium of young Ontarians who, since 2019, have been pursuing legal action against the Ford government over its climate change plan, is headed to the Ontario Court of Appeal this week.

These youths, many of whom launched this lawsuit when they were teens, have alleged the province’s handling of the climate crisis is so “woefully inadequate” it breached their Charter rights.
