A crucial issue currently troubling the country has to do with the suffering of native peoples in the now-abolished religiously oriented Residential Schools, which sought both to convert aboriginal students to Christianity and to integrate them into the wider culture. Thousands of Indian children were purportedly tortured, killed and buried in mass graves by Catholic priests and nuns in the period 1890-1969. The shame and resentment which followed the scandal became a national cause célèbre.

Two Vancouver drug advocates charged with trafficking

Two founders of a Vancouver drug user advocacy group that distributed what it said were safe doses of heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamines to prevent overdoses have been charged with drug trafficking as a result of police raids last year.

Vancouver police said in a statement Friday that members of the Drug User Liberation Front had spoken publicly about trafficking the substances.

Calgary water emergency could take a week to be repaired, city officials say

It could take crews roughly one week to repair a massive water main break that has forced Calgarians across the city to conserve water use, according to the city’s manager of drinking water distribution.

Emergency officials held a press conference Saturday afternoon to provide an update on the water issue that first arose Wednesday night.

Chris Houston told reporters that repair crews have been working around the clock to repair the water main.

Long time to go without a shower.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson managed to burn through $30,000 on personal grooming in one year, with most of the money being spent on makeup.

To pay for makeup and hair appointments, Johnson used the money his supporters contributed to his Friends of Brandon Johnson campaign fund.

Most of the $30,000 went to Denise Milloy, a makeup artist and self-professed ‘skincare enthusiast’ who operates on the south side of the city.

The good parts of Biden’s D-Day speech came straight from Ronald Reagan

We’ve heard a lot about Biden’s D-Day speech. We saw the poopy-pants moment, heard him use this solemn historic commemoration to attack Putin directly and Trump indirectly, and noted how Jill hustled him out double-quick, leaving the assembled WWII vets without any direct congratulations from America’s Commander-in-Chief (proof that he pooped?). But Biden’s speech had some good parts, though, notably when he spoke about events on June 6, 1944. That was weird but now we know how that happened. He plagiarized.

Four people arrested for mischief at downtown Toronto demonstration

Toronto police say four people have been arrested for mischief at a downtown pro-Palestinian demonstration on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Const. Laurie McCann said officers monitoring the demonstration “learned” that protesters were using a large flag to conceal that they were painting the street.
