In California, state Democrats have embraced another kind of favoritism: contracts for state-certified gay-owned businesses.

Outgoing Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith is considering running for Toronto city council, and has discussed the possibility with Mayor Olivia Chow.
Erskine-Smith has represented the federal riding of Beaches-East York since 2015, but is stepping down when Parliament rises this week. He announced his resignation in May after narrowly losing the nomination for the Ontario Liberals in an upcoming byelection in Scarborough Southwest, a result that dealt a blow to his plans to run for leader of the provincial party.

Toronto police say a 12-year-old boy is facing an attempted murder charge after an officer was struck by a stolen vehicle he was driving in East York early Monday morning.
Officers responded to Donlands Avenue and O’Connor Drive for an auto theft call just after 1 a.m. Police said officers discharged their firearms as they attempted to stop the driver who was allegedly fleeing the scene.
The officer was struck, and left with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
