Sweden is looking to revamp its Parental Code, making it more gender-neutral. The legislation, based on the traditional family, is largely obsolete because modern families “look different,” the country’s equality minister claims.

Stockholm has commissioned a special inquiry to review its 1950 Parental Code. Despite multiple amendments, the legislation still remains based on “the traditional nuclear family with a mother, father, and children.” For Asa Lindhagen, the Swedish minister for gender equality, that is a problem.

Revamping some of the national highway system makes sense—but basing those decisions on vague notions of social justice is not the way to do it.

The Interstate Highway System, which the U.S. began constructing in the 1950s, has a complicated legacy, to say the least. Boosters see it as the greatest infrastructure program undertaken in the country during the second half of the twentieth century, connecting vast areas in new and important ways, unlocking largely untapped regions outside of cities that helped spark a new kind of middle-class living. Detractors accuse the system’s planners and builders of emptying out cities and encouraging the rise of low-density suburban sprawl. That process, critics argue, prompted “white flight” to the suburbs, while stranding poor minorities in urban neighborhoods disfigured by the highways that bisected them. To these critics, the Interstate Highway System is just another example of America’s racist past.

China Is Rolling Out An Enormous “Weather Modification” System

This week, the Chinese government announced that it plans to drastically increase its use of technology that artificially changes the weather.

Cloud seeding technology, or systems that can blasts silver molecules into the sky to prompt condensation and cloud formation, has been around for decades, and China makes frequent use of it. But now, CNN reports that China wants to increase the total size of its weather modification test area to 5.5 million square miles by 2025 — a huge increase, and an area larger than that of the entire country of India, which could affect the environment on an epic scale and even potentially spur conflict with nearby countries.

‘Essex girl’ removed from dictionary following campaign

The expression “Essex girl” has been removed from a dictionary used to teach English after a campaign by women from the county who described the term as offensive.

According to the Oxford University Press, “Essex girl” was previously defined as “a name used especially in jokes to refer to a type of young woman who is not intelligent, dresses badly, talks in a loud and ugly way and is very willing to have sex.”

It has now been removed from the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, used to teach non-native English speakers, after a campaign group called the Essex Girls Liberation Front said using the expression was “very offensive”.

‘Havana Syndrome’ likely caused by microwave energy, government study finds

The mysterious neurological symptoms experienced by American diplomats in China and Cuba are consistent with the effects of directed microwave energy, according to a long-awaited report by the National Academies of Sciences that cites medical evidence to support the long-held conviction of American intelligence officials.

The report, obtained Friday by NBC News, does not conclude that the directed energy was delivered intentionally, by a weapon, as some U.S. officials have long believed. But it raises that disturbing possibility.
