Liverpool explosion: Three arrested under Terrorism Act after car blast at hospital

Three men have been arrested under the Terrorism Act after a man was killed in a car explosion outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

Counter-terrorism police said the men – aged 29, 26 and 21 – had been held in connection with the incident which happened just before 11:00 GMT.

The passenger of the car – said to be a taxi – was declared dead at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

The male driver was injured and is in hospital in a stable condition.

Detectives from Counter Terrorism Police North West said the men were detained in the Kensington area of the city.

Luxury hotel boots famous chef who sought to turn restaurant vegan

A celebrity Swiss chef has been ousted from his position at London’s luxury, five-star Claridge’s Hotel after he sparked controversy by trying to make its iconic, meat-laden menu fully plant-based to save the environment.

In a statement on Friday, Claridge’s announced that it had “mutually agreed” to separate with Daniel Humm, the chef and owner at its award-winning, Michelin-star restaurant Davies and Brook.

Amazon’s Bezos predicts only limited number of people will get to remain on Earth

Humanity will move most industry into space and allow only a select few to remain on our planet, which will be turned into a natural resort, according to self-funded space explorer Jeff Bezos.

The Amazon billionaire enthusiastically shared his predictions for what human civilization will look like in the future – with him personally helping to bring that future closer – during a talk at the annual Ignatius Forum in Washington, DC.

He expects vast cylindrical space colonies spinning to create artificial gravity for millions of residents to take over most industrial production. Meanwhile, Earth will be turned into a natural reserve with restricted access similar to US national parks today.

UK University defends student sex work training

Durham University defends student sex work training

Durham University has defended its decision to offer training sessions to help students involved in sex work.

Further Education Minister Michelle Donelan had accused it of “legitimising a dangerous industry which thrives on the exploitation of women”.

But the university said it was acting responsibly by offering students advice on how to stay safe.

Last week its students’ union offered staff and students guidance for people involved in the sex industry.

Electric vehicle maker Rivian rides Tesla hype train to $100B valuation despite almost no sales

Rivian Automotive, an electric vehicle company that has so far delivered only about 150 electric pickup trucks mostly to its own employees, surpassed General Motors Thursday to become the second most valuable U.S. car company behind Tesla.

The California company went public Wednesday in an initial public offering (IPO) that priced shares at $78 each. By the end of its first day as a public company, those shares were worth more than $100, enough to value the company at $88 billion. That’s more than Ford is worth.

11 Central Ohio men convicted of conspiring to illegally smuggle hundreds of guns to Canada for profit

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eleven defendants have been convicted and sentenced in a conspiracy to smuggle at least 200 firearms from Ohio to Canada for tens of thousands of dollars.

Abdulwahab Sharif Mohamed Hassan, 30, of Columbus, Ohio, was sentenced in federal court today to 72 months in prison.

A federal grand jury charged the co-conspirators in indictments returned on Aug. 19, 2020, and Nov. 19, 2020. Defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 12 months and 1 day to 72 months of imprisonment.

Government Prosecutors Seek 51 Months in Jail for ‘QAnon Shaman’ Jacob Chansley

An Arizona man who was seen inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 wearing horns should be sentenced to over four years in prison despite committing no violence that day, government prosecutors told a judge in a sentencing memorandum late Tuesday.

Jacob Chansley, known as the “QAnon shaman,” should also receive three years of supervised release and be forced to pay $2,000 in restitution, prosecutors said.

Canada checks whether its soldiers train Ukrainian neo-Nazis

Stung by allegations that its troops trained neo-Nazis in Ukraine, Canada’s defense department has launched a review into the vetting process on its “mentoring” and “capacity building” programs for foreign military personnel.

In response to the bombshell accusations, defense department spokesman Dan Le Bouthillier revealed that an internal review had begun last month that will “look holistically at all missions” where the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are involved with foreign military personnel.
