The annual Davos World Economic Forum saw quite a few remarkable speeches this year, with that of Donald Trump definitely stealing the show. But there were some others, too, that stand out, attempting to emulate the U.S. president’s candor and energy, albeit with varying success.
US President Donald Trump has begun talks with Volodymyr Zelensky at Davos on Thursday, after his envoy Steve Witkoff expressed optimism about finalising a deal to end the war in Ukraine.
“I think we’ve got it down to one issue and we have discussed iterations of that issue, and that means it’s solvable,” Witkoff said ahead of his trip to Moscow for talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko appeared in court on Friday, January 16th, where a judge is set to determine a pre-trial restraint measure against her in an expanding corruption case. Prosecutors are seeking a bail of UAH 50 million in connection with allegations that she offered undue benefits to members of parliament.

Former Liberal finance minister Chrystia Freeland said she plans to vacate her seat in the House of Commons by week’s end after facing heat from the opposition to do so immediately over an advisory role with the Ukrainian government.
It was quite the performance at the Élysée on Tuesday afternoon. Nearly 30 European leaders, plus US envoys, were gathered for a suitably wintery summit on the war in Ukraine. This, the 15th meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing since its launch last March, had a different feel to the previous 14. And so it proved. After several hours of talks, the Anglo-French-led coalition backing Ukraine seemed to have actually produced something. A ’declaration of intent’ no less.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Monday that he appointed former finance minister Chrystia Freeland as an economic advisor based on her “extensive experience in attracting investment and implementing economic transformations.” Yet it’s hard to see how Freeland’s economic experience would benefit war-stricken Ukraine. Worse, she accepted the position without informing her constituents first.

It’s so shady but so normal for the Liberal Party.

Good column from Urback – What’s a Canadian MP doing as an adviser for a foreign government?
Chrystia Freeland became the “minister of everything” in Justin Trudeau’s government because of her ostensible good judgment. This never made much sense to observers of her actual performance, which routinely showcased her poor political instincts against a backdrop of poor policy decisions.
Maybe the Chrystia Freeland that emerged at the end of Mr. Trudeau’s tenure – the one that decried “political gimmicks” and urged fiscal restraint – was there all along, hiding behind an obligatory façade of unyielding partisanship. Or perhaps, and what seems more likely, Ms. Freeland’s instincts actually aren’t that great.
In “Walt’s predictions for 2026” (WWW 31/12/25), I predicted that no matter how you slice it, the Ukraine is going to get sliced, diced and screwed in whatever “peace settlement” is negotiated this year. Sadly, I must now double down on that call, as it appears from this ayem’s news that the Ukraine is going to screw itself!
