This week, the world marks International Justice Day and the 28th anniversary of the Rome Statute, which established the International Criminal Court. All these years later, it remains among the most consequential efforts ever made to hold war criminals accountable. Now Washington has announced its intention to “dismantle the ICC brick by brick, if necessary.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has launched a campaign explicitly designed — as he put it in a Wall Street Journal op-ed — to “systematically disable” the court, pressuring nations to withdraw their support, cut off funding and abandon an institution the United States never joined. Countries that rely on American security guarantees, Rubio has made clear, should take the hint and fall in line.
Whatever the founding intention the ICC is now just a an extreme left bully pulpit.
