Gun group says firearms ban driven by ideology as government stresses public safety

OTTAWA – A firearm advocacy group says the Liberal government’s effort to ban a wide variety of rifles is being driven by ideology, not public safety.

But the federal Liberals say it’s all about prohibiting guns designed to kill people, and hunters will still have thousands of types of rifles and shotguns available to them.

The government wants to include an evergreen definition of a prohibited assault-style firearm in gun-control legislation being studied by the House of Commons public safety committee.

Expanded Liberal gun ban could cost taxpayers ‘another billion dollars,’ says criminologist

Public Safety Canada was unable to provide updated estimates for the significantly expanded expropriation, but criminologist Gary Mauser estimates the cost could add another $1 billion to the $756 million estimated cost the Parliamentary Budget Officer released last year.

“That is another billion dollars — because so many popular long guns will be caught by it,” said Mauser, a Simon Fraser University professor.

The amendment to Bill C-21, introduced by Liberal MP Paul Chiang on Nov. 22, alters the definition of “prohibited weapon” to include “a firearm that is a rifle or shotgun, that is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner and that is designed to accept a detachable cartridge magazine with a capacity greater than five cartridges of the type for which the firearm was originally designed.”

Study: U.S. gun death rates hit highest levels in decades

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. gun death rate last year hit its highest mark in nearly three decades, and the rate among women has been growing faster than that of men, according to study published Tuesday.

The increase among women — most dramatically, in Black women — is playing a tragic and under-recognized role in a tally that skews overwhelmingly male, the researchers said.

“Women can get lost in the discussion because so many of the fatalities are men,” said one the authors, Dr. Eric Fleegler of Harvard Medical School.

Among Black women, the rate of firearm-related homicides more than tripled since 2010, and the rate of gun-related suicides more than doubled since 2015, Fleegler and his co-authors wrote in the paper published by JAMA Network Open.

Conservatives are ‘fearmongering’ over assault-style gun ban says fear mongering public safety minister

OTTAWA – Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino accuses the Conservatives of “whipping up fear” that the Liberal government is outlawing ordinary long guns and hunting rifles.

In an interview, Mendicino says the government only wants to reinforce a regulatory ban on assault-style firearms like the AR-15 by enshrining a definition in legislation, and it is prepared to work with MPs to get it right.

He insists the government has no intention whatsoever of going after everyday long guns and hunting rifles, calling the notion “Conservative fearmongering.”

‘Largest gun ban in Canadian history’: Bill amendment could criminalize millions of hunting rifles

It’s a massive expansion of a gun control bill that was initially pitched mostly as a way to prevent the sale of Canadian handguns

The Government of Alberta has accused the federal government of planning to “ban legal firearm ownership altogether” after the Liberals quietly introduced a surprise 11th hour amendment that would constitute the largest gun prohibition in Canadian legislative history.

Assault-style firearm definition draws applause from gun-control group, ire of Conservatives

OTTAWA – The Liberal government prompted applause and anger on Tuesday by proposing an evergreen definition of a prohibited assault-style firearm for inclusion in gun-control legislation being studied by a House of Commons committee.

The measure, introduced during clause-by-clause review of the bill, responds to pleas from advocates of tougher gun laws who want a definition enshrined in law. It would build on a federal regulatory ban of many types of firearms two years ago.

More… C-21 amended to include semi auto ban

Today the Liberal/NDP/Bloc coalition government broke the glass on a typical Liberal distraction tool – gun bans. With Canadians reeling from a failed economy, tripling of taxes looming, 1.5M Canadians using foodbanks, hospitals overwhelmed with sick children who can’t even get Tylenol, Chinese interference in elections and of course a terrible showing at the Public Order Emergency Commission, the Liberals needed the media and Canadians in general talking about something other than their failures.

York Police Say All Seizures of Guns Used in Violent Crime Whose Origins Were Traced Came From US

According to “Guns, Gangs, and Violence,” a new police report by York Regional Police in Ontario, 100 percent of seized guns whose origin could be traced were found to be illegally smuggled into Canada from the United States.

In presenting the report to the York Regional Police Services Board on Nov. 7, Inspector Ahmad Salhia said that the Liberal government’s handgun freeze with Bill C-21 is not targeting the smuggling of illegal weapons into the country.

4,770 Guns Seized at Canadian Border Since 2017: Report

Fewer than 5,000 guns have been seized at the Canadian border since January 2017, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), despite increased federal promises to reduce cross-border firearms trafficking.

The Liberal cabinet told the House of Commons in a recently-tabled “Inquiry Of Ministry” that 4,770 guns have been seized by border officers since January 1, 2017, after the numbers were requested by Conservative MP Shannon Stubbs, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.
