Video showed officer allegedly telling 17-year-old victim, ‘I’m going to put a bullet in your head’, before he shot him

Youths hurled fireworks and stones at police and torched cars on the fringes of a march in a Paris suburb in memory of a 17-year-old French-Algerian boy shot by police.

The youths disrupted the march, which was led by the teenager’s mother. She and most of the more than 6,000 people who were taking part dispersed after violence broke out, leaving the troublemakers to face armed and helmeted police. Palls of acrid black smoke rose from burning, overturned cars.

France will mobilise 40,000 police officers across the country this evening to deal with the protests.

Protests and unrest erupted in the Paris region overnight after police shot dead a 17-year-old who failed to stop when ordered to by traffic police.

Video circulating on social media shows a police officer pointing a gun at the driver of a car, before a gunshot is heard. The car then crashes to a stop.

The teenager, named as Nahel, died of bullet wounds in the chest despite help from emergency services.

The officer accused of shooting him has been detained on homicide charges.

Muslims make up 10% of the French population, but more than 50% of the prison population. Recently, a feminist collective posted videos of French women for whom sexual harassment by “Maghrebi types” has become a common, and nightmarish, occurrence. May 16, 2023. The French examining magistrates in charge of the case of the murder of Samuel Paty, a high school teacher savagely beheaded on October 16, 2020 in Conflans Sainte Honorine, a small city in the suburbs of Paris where he taught, reveal the list of those they have decided to indict.

The list of 14 people does not include the murderer, Abdullakh Anzorov: he was shot dead by police. Prior to Paty’s murder, his name was in the database of the Central Office for the Fight against Crime, but he had not been placed under police surveillance. He was a Chechen Muslim, age 18, with refugee status in France, and had sought to join Islamic terrorist organizations in the Middle East. Two young French radicalized Muslims, Azim Epsirkhanov and Naïm Boudaoud, had accompanied him to a store where he bought a hunting knife to cut off his victim’s head. Both men told the investigators that they knew what Abdullakh Anzorov wanted to do and that they approved of it. They are being prosecuted for “criminal association”. Their prison sentence will not exceed 10 years; they will be eligible for release after seven or eight years — dismayingly little.
