Just Stop Oil protests have cost the Metropolitan Police more than £7.7 million in the past 13 weeks, the equivalent of the annual salary of around 200 officers.

Figures released by the force reveal the cost of policing 515 protests carried out by Just Stop Oil (JSO) since April, including slow marches in major roads in London and the disruption of high-profile sporting events.

More than 270 people have been arrested over the period with Matt Twist, the assistant commissioner, warning the disruption was “not protest, but crime”.

Two YouTube pranksters disrupted a vegan banquet hosted by Just Stop Oil and unmasked themselves as the masterminds behind a counter-protest movement against the eco-activists.

Joshua Pieters and Archie Manners have claimed responsibility for the stunt at the Heritage and Arts Centre in Bow, east London, where Just Stop Oil threw a meal for its supporters on Sunday.

Eco-zealots were seemingly rounded on and ‘kettled’ by a group of ‘counter-protesters’ today who call themselves ‘Just Stop P***ing Everyone Off’.

The group – pranksters wearing bright orange t-shirts which bear a striking resemblance to those worn by Just Stop Oil – then formed a human chain around them in a bid to foil one of their demonstrations.

However, the counter-protesters then ‘dispersed’ after climate activists ‘explained their reasoning for demanding an end to new oil and gas’, JSO explained on their social media.

A motorist has been filmed appearing to assault a Just Stop Oil protester after they blocked a road in Earl’s Court on Wednesday morning.

A man was filmed pushing the protester, Daniel Knorr, 21, to the ground before seemingly kicking him on Earl’s Court Road.

“Commando-style” protests by climate activists in France are provoking a public backlash and almost three quarters of respondents to a poll called for protesters to be dealt with using “counterterrorism tactics”.

In recent months environmentalists have staged headline-grabbing stunts, including throwing paint at artwork by Claude Monet on loan to Sweden and disrupting a performance at the Opéra Bastille in Paris, where a protester chained himself to the scenery.

A group of climate change activists trashed a $300 million superyacht owned by billionaire Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie on the Spanish island of Ibiza by blasting it with paint.

The Futuro Vegetal group, which translates to Future Vegetable, said on Twitter that two members used fire extinguishers filled with red and black paint to deface the “Kaos” superyacht Sunday morning.

Two protesters from environmental campaign group Just Stop Oil have interrupted the First Night of the Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

The duo mounted the stage and briefly unfurled an orange banner on Friday.

They were met with boos and jeers from some members of the audience at the BBC’s classical music festival, before being led away by security staff.

There are countless contradictions on what passes for the left these days. We’re against sexism, they cry, and then they’ll while away entire days hounding every uppity broad who dares to question the trans ideology. We’re anti-racist, they say, even as they yell ‘Uncle Tom’ at any person of colour who deviates from their white liberal orthodoxies. Be kind, they tweet, in between their venomous crusades against TERFs, gammon, boomers, deplorables, ‘semi-fascists’, you name it.

Forget the tactics of these activists. Their creepy, authoritarian, anti-human ideology is easily the worst thing about them.

Everyone’s fed up with Just Stop Oil. The eco-extremist troupe’s recent stunts – bringing traffic to a standstill with their ‘slow marches’ through London; disrupting play at the snooker, the cricket and now the tennis – have turned off even its natural allies. Last week, Californian millionaire Trevor Neilson, who once helped bankroll the group, said its activities had become ‘performative’ and ‘counterproductive’. Even Swampy (aka Daniel Hooper), the notorious, tunnel-digging eco-warrior of the 1990s, has distanced himself from Just Stop Oil. When asked by The Sunday Times whether he would storm the pitch at Lord’s, as JSO did last week, he said ‘I wouldn’t have thought so, no’, adding that greens today should focus on ‘bringing communities together’. When Swampy is telling you to tone it down, you know you’ve lost the room.
