TORONTO — In the first days of June, Ontario’s highest court quietly affirmed the release of Deepak Paradkar, a Toronto-area criminal lawyer accused by United States prosecutors of serving as a senior operative inside Ryan Wedding’s billion-dollar drug organization — the man who, the indictment alleges, introduced the former Canadian Olympian to the “trusted couriers” who carried cartel cocaine and methamphetamine into Canada through the arteries of the commercial trucking industry.
No one was talking about the elephant parked in the corner of the room. If they were, it was in the most hushed of tones.
A murmur could get one cancelled, so better to keep quiet, even when cops should be taking a bow for shattering a cross-border dope smuggling ring and seizing an eye-popping $139 million in drugs.
But then, there is that elephant.

Toronto police are working to identify a suspect who allegedly sexually assaulted a young person on board a TTC bus last week.
According to police, the incident happened in the area of Victoria Park and Danforth avenues at around 4 p.m. on July 16.
Police allege that a youth boarded a TTC bus at Victoria Park Subway Station and sat in the first row behind the driver.
Two men allegedly associated with the notorious criminal organization MS-13 are facing charges after police say they trafficked and sexually exploited a victim throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
In November 2025, police launched Project Mermaid after one of the suspects—who was serving a “lengthy sentence” at a Kingston, Ont., prison at the time—used an unauthorized cellphone to communicate with the victim and his co-accused.
“Investigators allege the two men used intimidation, manipulation, and threats of violence to control the (female) victim while financially benefiting from her exploitation,” police said in a news release issued Wednesday.
There were suspicions and problems with the Calgary contractor courting Punjabi pop star Yashinder Kaur.
For starters, the 29-year-old Indian woman discovered that her long-distance lover of five years had a wife and children in Canada. At one point, family members told CBC News there had been embryonic marriage plans between Kaur and 37-year-old Sukhwinder Singh Brar.
In the minutes after gunfire broke out at a Toronto street festival last week, a young woman was seen walking unsteadily toward an ambulance, her outstretched arms held by a paramedic. Her white dress was streaked with blood.
She had been among the revellers at the Salsa on St. Clair festival, a summer weekend party that for years has featured hundreds of people dancing together in the street. In an instant, that evening was shattered by gunfire that left two men dead, the young woman and four others wounded and the city of Toronto shaken.
For those who were there it will remain a seminal shooting until the next one.
But face it reckless public shootings by the usual suspects are common as dirt in Toronto.
If you’re a smart Torontonian you have learned to avoid formerly safe public events where the mass shooting set are likely to be in attendance.
This is the real diversity.
A Calgary man who beat a woman unconscious and then raped her created “a scene of stark horror” for his victim and will spend between seven and 10 years in prison.
A sentencing hearing took place Thursday for Kepra Udup Bang, who was convicted earlier this year of aggravated sexual assault on a woman in July 2019.

Two men from Brampton and Mississauga have been arrested in connection to the “largest methamphetamine seizure” in Halton Region history worth an estimated $5 million.
In a news release, officials say the probe, dubbed “Project Jester” began earlier this year and focused on “a network of individuals believed to be involved in the importation and distribution of illicit substances within the GTA.” It also included “criminal intelligence” from officers at the Waterloo police service.
The boy who killed 83-year-old Pickering resident Eleanor Doney in her front yard as she was raking leaves has been given the maximum youth sentence for first-degree murder.
On Wednesday, Superior Court Justice Lisa Wannamaker ruled that the 15-year-old — who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) — would receive some credit for the more than 13 months he spent in pre-sentence detention, ordering he spend an additional five years in a youth facility receiving intensive programming and counselling.
Following that, he will be released back into the community under supervision for another four years

MANDEL: Teen still obsessed with killers despite apologizing for Pickering senior’s murder
The boy who savagely murdered a Pickering grandmother gardening on her front law last year still has an ongoing fascination with serial killers and has no insight into the devastation he has caused.
There is one detail from the Boxing Day murder of Jane Creba in Toronto that has stayed fresh in my mind for more than 20 years: The shooter, according to various witnesses, raised his gun to eye level, and then cocked it to the side before firing.
It’s noteworthy because it’s so stupid; you can know nothing about guns and still understand that it’s probably the worst way to take a shot. You only do it because you want to look cool – because you think you’re a bona fide gangster, instead of a loser who decided to take his beef with a rival gang to a busy area of Toronto while shoppers tried to enjoy their day.
Toronto is a city that prides itself on safety, diversity, and the ability to gather without fear. But on Saturday night, during the Salsa on St. Clair festival, that sense of ease was shattered. Multiple people were shot. Two died at the scene. Police urged the public to avoid the area as officers secured the intersection and searched for answers.
The tragedy is real. The grief is real. But what worries me even more is what this event reveals about the cultural climate we’ve been drifting toward for years — a climate where violence no longer shocks us the way it should.
Toronto remains a relatively safe city by North American standards and the Salsa shooting may have been Protestant gunplay for all we know.
But diversity is not a strength. It’s the reason why we aren’t “shocked” in our balkanized metropolis.
Most of Toronto’s gun crime is committed by “racialized” communities who don’t play by our rules.
The usual suspects make the news often enough to end anyone’s shock.
So long as they aren’t shooting up your tribe or mine ain’t nobody gonna care.

A 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy have been charged after one person was seriously injured in an assault at Woodbine Beach on Wednesday night.
Toronto police said they initially were called to the beach at 10:45 p.m. for a stabbing.
In a news release on Saturday, police announced they had arrested the suspects, one of whom was identified as Shahabuddin Kabiry. The 17-year-old boy cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Shahabuddin is an old family name in the Guelph area.

York Regional Police say they are searching for a suspect wanted in two separate hate-motivated assaults in Vaughan.
According to police, the first incident occurred on June 9 at around 8:45 p.m. in the area of Major Mackenzie Drive West and Amusement Drive.
“The suspect approached the victim, made a racial comment, and then assaulted them,” York Regional Police said in a news release, adding that the suspect then fled the area.
