ATHENS, Ga. — Tren de Aragua gang member Jose Ibarra was sentenced to life without parole Wednesday for the vicious murder of promising nursing student Laken Riley in a case that ignited a national firestorm over the Biden administration’s open border policy and coddling of illegal immigrants.

The sentencing was meted out a little more than two hours after Judge Patrick Haggard announced the guilty verdict on all charges on the fourth day of the Athens, Georgia, murder trial, in which 29 witnesses were called by the prosecution.

Toronto police confirm all guns involved in mass shootout were smuggled from US

Toronto police on Thursday morning confirmed one of the 23 arrests laid after Monday’s gang shooting at a west end recording studio was a teen wanted for his involvement in a deadly attack.

The 16-year-old boy was wanted by police for his involvement in a deadly home invasion in Etobicoke in April. The boy, whose identity is protected because he’s a juvenile, has now been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Matthew Bergart on April 25.

Guns and drugs seized from organized crime group linked to Mexican cartel, RCMP say

Members of the RCMP’s federal police say they have arrested three men in B.C. for their alleged role in a “transnational organized crime group” they say is connected to Mexican drug cartels and importing cocaine into Canada.

Part of the enforcement was a raid on the group’s “heavily fortified headquarters” in Surrey on Sept. 23, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

FBI says tips coming in on whereabouts of fugitive Canadian ex-Olympian Ryan Wedding

More than three weeks after the FBI first offered a reward of up to $50,000 US for information leading to the arrest of Ryan Wedding, investigators say tips have been coming in. But the manhunt continues for the former Team Canada Olympic snowboarder, accused of leading a murderous, transnational drug trafficking operation.

“The FBI has, and continues to receive, information related to the whereabouts of Ryan Wedding,” FBI spokesperson Rukelt Dalberis told CBC News in an email. “Tips received at this point have yet to lead to an arrest.”

Gun violence is on the rise in Canada. In parts of the Greater Toronto Area, it’s a record-breaking year

Melanie Ward remembers the moment she learned her son was dead with haunting clarity.

“I just dropped to my knees and screamed,” she said.

Her son, Alexander Circiumaru, was on his way to an appointment in downtown Hamilton earlier this year but never made it.

The 19-year-old was shot multiple times in broad daylight on March 6 in what Hamilton police believe was a targeted attack. Circiumaru was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Ford government is extending the legal definition of a highway to include parking lots in response to a request from provincial police forces that say they’re struggling to tackle increasingly complicated cases of careless driving and noisy late-night car rallies.

The changes come through new transport and safety legislation the provincial government plans to pass with a focus on enhancing police powers over auto theft and driving offences.

Mounties in B.C. raid ‘largest and most sophisticated’ drug lab in Canadian history

Mounties in British Columbia have discovered the “largest and most sophisticated” drug-production laboratory in Canadian history, federal investigators announced Thursday, describing the facility as a “super lab” operated by international organized criminals.

The facility, located east of Kamloops in the rural community of Falkland, was capable of producing several kilograms of methamphetamine, fentanyl and MDMA per week, David Teboul, an assistant commissioner with the federal RCMP in the Pacific region, announced at a news conference in Surrey.

In the summer of 2023, a Canadian taxpayer logged into his Canada Revenue Agency account, falsely amended previous tax returns and wrongly claimed he was suddenly owed more than $40 million in refunds.

Then, without verifying the newly filed tax slips, the Canada Revenue Agency authorized the payments and promptly began making the initial instalments, according to sources.

An investigation by CBC’s The Fifth Estate and Radio-Canada has learned the scam might never have been detected, except for one thing.
