A leaked audio recording of an internal CBC disciplinary meeting for a national news anchor reveals the public broadcaster’s tension over its policies on journalistic standards and freedom clashing with protecting its corporate image.

If you are looking for solid analysis and balanced reporting on climate change and climate policy, you are unlikely to get it from CBC News. See, for example, a story last week on Ontario’s climate targets. Internal documents from the public service project Ontario’s greenhouse gas emissions will be around 145 megatonnes in 2030, depending on industry actions and other factors. If the projection holds, the province would miss its target to reduce emissions to 142 megatonnes by 2030. The environment minister, appearing to contradict these projections, said on June 5th that the Progressive Conservative government’s plan “is working” and that the province was in fact on track to hit its targets.

At all times, during an election period and beyond, the media must report accurate information and, when necessary, correct the record. For example, following the English-language federal leaders’ debate on April 17, CBC reporter Jonathon Gatehouse appeared on CBC News and “fact-checked” a statement by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who had referenced a study published by the Fraser Institute. Unfortunately, during the segment, Gatehouse got his facts wrong.

That’s the CBC’s job.

New CBC boss wants ’national conversation’ on Conservatives’ vow to defund the public broadcaster

OTTAWA — With U.S. President Donald Trump making “territorial claims,” the new head of CBC says defunding the public broadcaster could erode a pillar of Canada’s cultural identity.

Marie-Philippe Bouchard, CEO of CBC-Radio-Canada, is calling for a “national conversation” on the Conservative promise to defund, and is launching a tour to get it started.
