Infectious-disease scientist fired from Winnipeg laboratory surfaces in China

One of two fired scientists at the centre of an RCMP investigation into a massive security breach at Canada’s top infectious-disease laboratory in Winnipeg is working in China and collaborating with researchers from the People’s Liberation Army.

The Globe and Mail has learned that Xiangguo Qiu has been conducting research with Chinese military scientists and other virology researchers, including at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, on antibodies for coronavirus and the deadly Ebola and Nipah viruses.

Trudeau government will stop sending arms to Israel, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says

OTTAWA—The Trudeau government will cease future arms exports to Israel even though a motion passed Monday by the House of Commons that called for such action is non-binding, says Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly.

“It is a real thing,” said Joly, speaking to the Star briefly on the morning after a majority of Liberal MPs and cabinet voted in support of a modified NDP resolution that some Jewish groups say undermines Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas.

The controversial resolution sought to toughen Canada’s stance on the Middle East conflict. The original motion supported an immediate ceasefire (to which was added a call for Hamas to disarm); recognition of the State of Palestine (which was changed to support for the “establishment of the State of Palestine as part of a negotiated two-state solution negotiation); and a weapons sales suspension (which was changed to a cessation or ban).

Polls show ‘across-the-board, generalized retreat’ from Liberals, says Coletto

As the Liberals consider their best way forward from the Durham byelection—which was widely seen as confirming many of the recent in trends in national polling—the party will need a “fundamentally different” approach if it is to be in a position to retain government, says pollster David Coletto.

An NDP motion puts a big question to the test: Will Canada recognize Palestinian statehood?

An opposition day motion brought forward by the NDP’s foreign affairs critic Monday could set the cat among the pigeons in the federal Liberal caucus.

The non-binding motion calls on the government to take a number of actions in response to the war in the Middle East, including that it should “officially recognize the State of Palestine.”

The motion was sponsored by NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh with the party’s foreign affairs critic, Heather McPherson, acting as the point person.

“We wrote this in a way that it’s not supposed to be a ‘gotcha’ motion,” she said.

It is Non-Binding giving Trudeau an out.

The carbon levy will haunt Justin Trudeau whether he raises it or not

Justin Trudeau acknowledged this week that he’s no longer popular. Hearkening back to similar comments by former prime minister Brian Mulroney, whose funeral will be held Saturday, Trudeau said, “My job is not to be popular. … My job is to do the right things for Canada now, and do the right things for Canadians a generation from now.”

Friends and foes suggest a solution to Trudeau’s popularity problem — one that may lead the Liberals towards an existential crisis in the next election — is a pause to the carbon price increase coming to Canadians’ wallets on April 1.

But Trudeau has much more to lose if he amends his government’s signature climate policy than if he stands his ground.

In her 2023 blockbuster “Fisman’s Fraud: The Rise of Canadian Hate Science,” Dr. R.N. Watteel outed the medical, media, academic, and political proponents of a prodigiously fraudulent Canadian study using the “follow-the-science” meme to justify discrimination and hate against the unvaccinated.

After Justin Trudeau’s Freedom Convoy debacle and his unwarranted invocation of the Emergencies Act, in which he acted like a vicious and unrepentant tyrant, the prime minister, she writes, “was in desperate need of science and justification for his [vaccine] mandates, so in came Fisman and his colleagues… What Fisman does is, he concocts…a model to simulate fake data that show the opposite of what the real data show,” claiming that “it’s the unvaccinated who have higher COVID-19 rates… and should be forbidden their Charter mobility rights.” The study is entirely counterfeit and should be regarded as criminal.

How asylum claims by students at these two Ontario colleges became ‘alarming’

Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller warned last month that the increases in the number of asylum claims from international students is “alarming” and “totally unacceptable.”

Speaking ahead of cabinet meeting on Parliament Hill, Miller highlighted Toronto’s Seneca College, where asylum claims from international students increased from 300 in 2022 to almost 700 in 2023, and Kitchener’s Conestoga College, where claims jumped from 106 to 450 during that same period, reports The Canadian Press.

US Jailed Prof for Lying About Wuhan Ties, Chinese ‘Talent’ Recruitment; Would Canada Do So With Winnipeg Lab Scientists?

In 2023, a U.S. judge sentenced high-profile Harvard professor Charles Lieber to imprisonment and fines for lying about his ties with China’s state-run talent recruitment program and a Wuhan university. Several other researchers in the United States have been arrested on similar charges in recent years.

In Canada, after more than four years since Xiangguo Qiu and Keding Cheng were expelled from the high-security Winnipeg lab in 2019 and later fired for undisclosed ties with Chinese regime entities and talent programs, no charges have been announced.
