As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. president-elect Donald Trump hail their surprise meeting in Florida on Friday night as “productive,” federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says Trudeau came home empty-handed for Canada.

Poilievre made the comment Sunday in response to a reporter’s question about the Trudeau-Trump three-hour dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla. The pair talked cross-border issues including Trump’s threat to slap massive 25-per-cent tariffs on Canadian products being imported into the U.S.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says his fellow provincial leaders are united in pushing for Canada to meet its NATO defence spending targets ahead of schedule, and that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was “surprised” to hear it.

Ford — currently chair of the Council of the Federation of Canada’s Premiers — told CTV Question Period host Vassy Kapelos in an exclusive Canadian broadcast interview airing Sunday that the premiers are making the ask amid U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s threats of new tariffs, and conveyed it to the prime minister in his meeting with the premiers last week.

New survey finds young Canadians most supportive of China’s Communist Party government, least concerned about foreign interference

Young Canadians are the most supportive of China’s Communist government and are the most concerned that reports of Chinese government interference could lead to anti-Asian racism, according to a new report.

The survey, conducted by the not-for-profit Digital Public Square and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy’s China Governance Lab, also revealed that young Canadians are the least satisfied with Canadian democracy and are less confident in their ability to express controversial political views freely compared to other age groups.

Trudeau and police send wrong signals to Jews and resident Hamas supporters

It was another distressing week for Canadian Jews and those alarmed by the rise of antisemitism in our common life and on our streets.

There was the violent riot in Montreal, where an amalgam of anti-NATO protesters and university student activists somehow managed to include Israel, Zionists, and Jews as targets of their graffiti, vandalism, and car-burning. Israel is not part of NATO and Zionism has nothing to do with tuition policy in Quebec.

They know the message they’re sending.

GUNTER: GST holiday a boon to Canadians? Fiddle, diddle

Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are fiddling while Canada burns. And Jagmeet Singh’s New Democrats are performing as their backup musicians.

The Liberals are obsessed with getting their gimmicky GST holiday passed. At the same time, on Nov. 29, Statistics Canada announced that for the sixth consecutive quarter (and the eighth quarter in the last nine), Canada’s per-capita Gross Domestic Product declined.

The GDP decline is the far bigger problem. It’s the national fire. A country that is in economic decline cannot afford all its fancy social programs such as health care and pensions.

Trudeau’s Canada: Winnipeg homeless shelter sees rise in seniors needing to use its services

A Winnipeg shelter says it’s seeing a rising number of seniors accessing its services, with some experiencing homelessness for the first time.

“A lot of them are simply being priced out of life, for a lack of a better term,” said Darren Nodrick, the director of development at Siloam Mission in Winnipeg. “Increased cost in rent as well as food is just too much.

“Some folks that are accessing our drop-in are coming for meals because they’re having to choose between rent and/or food.”

Both the federal Liberals and Ontario Conservatives claim that their governments have made progress in addressing human trafficking. But we are advocates who have worked with migrants in the sex industry for two decades, and the stories they continue to tell us are not of being rescued from human traffickers by the police. Instead, they recount the terror of being targeted by anti-trafficking “rescue raids” – being surveilled, interrogated and strip-searched; having their wages, phones and passports seized by the police; and being placed in jail cells or immigration detention centres before being deported.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the NDP is turning its back on workers by holding up a promised $250 rebate the Liberals promised to send to millions of Canadians.

Last week, Trudeau announced a multi-billion-dollar affordability package that includes a proposed two-month GST holiday on some goods and services — including children’s toys, beer and wine and restaurant meals — and a plan to send $250 cheques to the 18.7 million people in Canada who worked in 2023 and earned $150,000 or less.
