Inside a cool, dimly lighted trailer where the quiet is broken mostly by the crackle of radio traffic, Abrin Vasquez drives a 40-ton bulldozer hundreds of yards away.

Vasquez is remotely piloting a Caterpillar dozer spreading trash across the Marana Regional Landfill near Tucson, Ariz. He used to be out in the heat running the machine from the cab, a potentially dangerous job in the landfill’s rough, trash-filled terrain. Now, he is safely away from that in the control trailer, doing the same job from a virtual cab.

“It was challenging at first, but it’s just a matter of getting used to it,” said Vasquez, 25. He spent two years operating the dozer in the landfill, where treading uneven ground can be physically punishing work. “I don’t feel the bumps now,” he said.

At a beachfront resort in San Juan, Puerto Rico, SpaceX founder Elon Musk joined a three-hour discussion on humanity’s dire fate if artificial intelligence started to rapidly improve.

The afternoon panel was part of a private conference hosted in early 2015 by the Future of Life Institute, a new nonprofit whose founders — mostly outsiders to AI — believed the nascent technology would grow so powerful it could render humans extinct.

In 1987, Wendell Berry’s essay “Why I Am Not Going to Buy a Computer” appeared in Harper’s. The personal computer had by then become ubiquitous. Manufacturers of hardware and software were booming, and as in most booms, many jumped on the hype bandwagon.

Berry’s point in his essay remains clear — the progress of machines is not identical with human progress. Replying to the many people who told him that he could improve his writing by using a computer instead of his pencil, pad, and Royal typewriter, he challenged their underlying premise — that emulating machines is the highest good.

A false AI intelligence report almost triggered a war with China, according to reports.

Members of the US military came close to boarding a Chinese ship in the Middle East, after being told the vessel was carrying nuclear weapons components.

Military aircraft were also close at hand, CNN reported.

However, when officials scrutinised the report more closely, it emerged that a chatbot in the AI programme had misidentified what was on board the vessel.

Mustafa Suleyman said rival firm Anthropic is treating AI like it is human, an approach he called “misguided” which could create technology that humanity cannot control.

Speaking to the BBC’s Today programme, the chief executive said it was “right” for people to be concerned about AI, but there were “very practical things that we can do” to control it.

This is probably a take on the AI-will-kill-us-all debate that you haven’t seen. If it isn’t, let me commend you for the quality of your social media feed and/or your internet-surfing habits. But if you’re a regular reader of The American Spectator, you’ve hopefully picked up enough knowledge to be very skeptical of a classic information operation, and you recognized something fishy in the spectacle put on by the AI companies last week and over the weekend.

Sometimes the reporting on artificial intelligence makes it sound as though its chief threat is to the jobs of assembly line workers, law library clerks, and, someday, maybe truck drivers. Those certainly are trends. You could say that AI’s “entry level job” was to displace entry-level workers. That probably has some truth if we are dealing with sheer numbers, but it should not imply that AI is merely advancing up the workplace ladder from the bottom rung.

US President Donald Trump has downplayed risks posed by artificial intelligence following days of dire warnings by experts.

“You have a lot of very negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn’t be bringing it up and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen,” Trump said during a visit to Ireland.

One of the warnings came from a former Anthropic researcher who said “there is a strong chance that we could all die in the immediate future” if the current pace of development continued.

However, we rarely see the media describe Democrats as “far-left.” Even more rarely do the media explain exactly what policies make a politician far-right or far-left. So, I thought I would discuss this issue with Gemini, which reflects what the media report.

Three of the nation’s leading artificial intelligence executives endorsed slowing down the blistering pace of technological advancement, revealing the growing unease with its potential dangers at the industry’s very highest levels.
