Canadian Military Expands Prayer Ban in Official Settings With New Directive Applying to All Personnel

The Canadian Armed Forces has issued new rules that expand restrictions on faith-specific language and practices during official military ceremonies and public events, including references to God.

The new directive, released on July 29, applies to all Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, Department of National Defence (DND) employees, contractors, and volunteers engaged in offering “spiritual or religious services” for the CAF, expanding application of previous instructions that only specified chaplains. The new directive also offers further specific details on what the prohibition entails.

You will remember Prime Minister Mark Carney practically quaking with delight on Canada Day when he announced that Canada was going to have a 2027 entry in Eurovision, a camp-glam TV ritual that has launched dozens of music careers and that arguably serves as the continent’s nearest approximation to the Super Bowl. The PM even reached into the past to revive the old advertising slogan, “The world needs more Canada!” Why, it almost seemed as if he was using the occasion to reinforce his new European-facing, middle-powers foreign-policy orientation.

Now standing trial in Stuttgart, they naturally view themselves as the victims.
