The UK Supreme Court has ruled that the Christian-focused model of religious education (RE) in Northern Ireland’s schools is unlawful, concluding that the current system fails to meet the requirement that teaching be “objective, critical and pluralistic.” The judgment follows a legal challenge brought by an unnamed father and his daughter, who attended a state-controlled primary school in Belfast. The girl had received Christian religious education and participated in Christian worship, but her non-religious parents objected to her being taught about Christian faith, despite having an option to withdraw their child at any time from RE.

Loose wire on ship may have led to Baltimore bridge collapse, report says

A loose wire on a cargo ship caused a power outage that may have led to the 2024 deadly collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, US investigators have said.

The Dali container ship, which crashed into the bridge and left six workers dead, was “preventable”, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators said during a hearing on Tuesday.

Police stationed at the bridge’s ends were notified that the ship had veered off course but did not call the construction team’s inspector to warn them.

Pope Leo backs US bishops’ rejection of Trump’s policies

Pope Leo XIV said many immigrants in the US were being treated in a way “that is extremely disrespectful,” supporting a recent statement by US Bishops expressing concern about immigration raids.

Pope Leo XIV has supported the US Conference of Catholic Bishops rare statement on US immigration and urged the US government to “treat people humanely.”

The Bishops’ message leveled criticism of President Donald Trump’s policies of mass deportation and the “vilification” of immigrants. The US clergy spoke about the fear and anxiety that immigration raids have sown in communities. They also rejected the denial of care to migrants in detention centers.

I don’t think many support a Pope that roots for illegal alien criminals.

Family of Indian man lynched over beef rumours vows to keep fighting for justice

The family of a Muslim man, who was lynched by a Hindu mob in India’s Uttar Pradesh state in 2015, say they will continue fighting for justice after authorities recently moved to drop all charges against the accused.

Mohammad Akhlaq, then 50, was beaten to death after rumours spread that he had stored and consumed beef, a claim his family continues to deny.

Slaughter of cows is a sensitive issue in India as the animal is considered sacred by Hindus, who comprise 80% of the country’s 1.2 billion people. Uttar Pradesh is among the 20 states with strict laws banning cow slaughter and the sale and consumption of beef.

The gift of a teddy bear has always been thought a safe option for children. But parents could be forgiven for thinking that perhaps nothing is sacred after an AI-powered bear was only too happy to provide tips on where knives were kept and explain various sexual positions.

A group of researchers in the US and Canada tested three of the toys, including Curio’s Grok and Miko’s Miko 3. But it was the answers given by the Chinese-made Kumma teddy, retailing at $99, which provided the most worrying answers.
