Former President Donald Trump took the stage in the final hour of the Republican National Convention Thursday and delivered a deeply heartfelt, and harrowing, address just days after he miraculously survived an assassin’s bullet — vowing to heal and unite the country.

The powerful speech, which he wrote after his terrifying near-death experience, was a departure from his usual bombastic and brazen rhetoric. He only referred to his political foe, President Biden, by name once — but avoided any of the sneering nicknames he has used to denounce the president in the past, such as “Crooked Joe.”

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin—It’s just before 4 p.m. and everyone at the Republican National Convention is jockeying for a glimpse of Senator J.D. Vance. A woman kicks off her bedazzled heels, then stands on her seat barefoot to get a better view. A delegate tells me he just borrowed a woman’s lipstick to scrawl “VANCE” in capital letters on a white Trump sign.

Everyone is craning their necks toward the Ohio delegation, where Vance is shaking hands, posing for selfies, and gleefully fist-bumping attendees who pull away with a bewildered look, as if they can’t believe they just crossed paths with the future vice president of the United States.

Donald Trump has chosen Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate, selecting a rising star in the party and previously outspoken Trump critic who in recent years has closely aligned himself with the former president.

Trump announced his pick Monday on Truth Social.

Over the years, my tastes have become increasingly more narrow and singular so that what was once a host of “favorites” has dwindled to a core two or maybe three. My all-time favorite television show is the first season of True Detective — it’s the only thing that I can watch over and over again from start to finish. I find it to be a beautiful celebration of a fading America, particularly the nation’s southern heritage, and a well of insights into the human psyche and soul, the triumph of good over evil, and the necessity of absolute morality in a progressively relativistic and nihilistic world.

In late June, 16 Nobel economists led by former World Bank Chief Economist Joseph Stiglitz issued a letter warning that a second Trump term would have “a negative impact on America’s economic standing in the world and a destabilizing effect on the U.S. domestic economy.” Among the gripes: Trump’s “fiscally irresponsible” budget plans and the “vagaries of his actions and policies” in relations with other countries.

If the past is anything to go by, this is probably the most powerful endorsement of the Trump presidency yet.

Young Republicans used to be difficult to find, but many millennials, like Picozzi, and Gen Zers are becoming vocal about their frustrations with the Biden administration, especially over their economic futures, and see a better future with Donald Trump in the White House.

In politics, it’s important to remember that even if your preferred issue or candidate is lagging in the polls, the direction in which it (or he) is moving matters. Currently, candidate Trump is moving up on every metric. I’m mindful of the many warnings against hubris: “There’s many a slip twixt cup and lip”; the Yiddish “Mann tracht, Un Gott Lacht” (“man plans and God laughs”); and, of course, Aesop’s “Never count your chickens before they hatch.” However, optimism is a driving force in momentum, so let’s celebrate a bit.
