I had an epiphany the other day about life in Canada. It came to me, of all places, in a grocery store, holding an $11 carton of milk. The shop in question was Summerhill Market, an upscale store in an upscale part of Toronto, with prices to match: $10.49 for a dozen eggs, $14.36 for a single chicken breast, $20 for a small bag of rice. At 37 years old, I’m doing all right—I no longer worry about paying the rent every month—but I still only go to Summerhill to scan the aisles for clearance stickers. Otherwise, I retreat to the nearby No Frills. I used to marvel at how Summerhill stayed afloat during an affordability crisis—until I started paying attention to the other shoppers. Most are seniors, filling their baskets with $20 bags of potato chips and other little luxuries I could never imagine buying.
I get the feeling Carney’s LPC is softening us up to accept the elite’s enjoyment of communism while we enjoy the tyranny.
