While acknowledging his Liberal government overshot post-pandemic admissions to Canada, Justin Trudeau defended immigration as essential and said successful integration depends not on common ancestry, but “shared values.”

The former prime minister shared his thoughts on immigration during a fireside-style chat with Finnish journalist Jaako Loikanna at the Sumoi Areena, an annual public debate and societal discussion forum in Pori, Finland, last Thursday.

Last month, when Statistics Canada delivered unexpected bad news about a second consecutive quarter of negative real-GDP growth, there was a frenzy of pooh-poohing and counter-pooh-poohing about whether Canada was really in recession. On Thursday CP’s Craig Lord called attention to a different angle on the whole fuss, which isn’t the notional recession (yet), but the forecasting failure that preceded it. Economists at the Desjardins credit-union consortium are warning that StatCan’s monthly economic estimates are growing wobbly, leading to larger retrospective revisions — i.e., bigger surprises — when quarterly and yearly data are released later.

On Saturday night in Kyiv, you could hear the beat of techno music coming from behind the thick line of trees along a busy road as an air-raid siren wailed, warning of a possible attack.

A path winding through the wooded area led to an open-air industrial site where people danced in the fog of artificial smoke to a DJ performing on a stage that flashed red and gold lights. It was only 6:30 p.m. − the whole party being held under a bright blue sky.

So your tax dollars are being used to make the world safe for Ukraine’s Drag Queens. That’s just swell.
