3,500 birds have to be euthanized following massive SoCal cockfighting bust, officials say

Authorities arrested 56 people and seized 3,500 birds, as well as firearms and drug paraphernalia, during a multi-week cockfighting investigation in San Bernardino County, officials said.

The operation, dubbed “Crowing Rooster,” ran from June 14 to Aug. 1 and entailed 26 search warrants served at locations throughout the county, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Sic them on their captors.

Ontario funds free building code course, opposition urges more action on skills gaps

TORONTO — An Ontario college has opened applications to newcomers for a free program intended to address what it describes as a “critical” shortage of building code officials in the province.

The provincial government is funding the training in a move that opposition politicians say is sorely needed, but that they say is just one step towards closing multiple training gaps in the province.

Federal officials spent at least $170,000 bringing Canadian ISIS women home from Syria, according to internal government documents that show expenses for ice cream, candy and wine.

The money was for costs incurred when eight women who had traveled to the Middle East to join the Islamic State returned to Canada with their children in 2022 and 2023.

Is He The Big Turk? Fourth man charged after 44 people found in truck by U.S. border

The RCMP say a fourth person has been charged in an alleged human smuggling operation after 44 people were found in “horrific” conditions inside a cube truck earlier this month in Quebec near the United States border.

Tolga Yilmaz, 34, was arrested at Montreal Trudeau International Airport on Aug. 8, allegedly on his way out of the country. The RCMP announced the arrest Tuesday in a media release.

Ogulcan Mersin, 25, and Dogan Alakus and Firat Yuksek, both 31, were charged on Aug. 4.

Federal prison staff now outnumber inmates as costs reach record high

Canada’s federal prison system now employs more staff than it houses inmates, according to newly released Correctional Service figures, raising fresh concerns about the soaring cost of the country’s penal system.

Blacklock’s Reporter says Correctional Service Canada (CSC) reported having more than 20,000 employees, compared to 14,837 inmates held across 43 federal penitentiaries. Another 8,717 individuals are currently on parole in the community. The system operates with a $3.9 billion annual budget.
