As Toronto’s official FIFA World Cup hosting duties come to an end, data shows that the city saw little economic gain during the first two weeks of the tournament.
That’s in large part due to the model that the World Cup and other large international sporting events are based on, former Toronto mayor David Miller said. Major sports organizations such as FIFA make the biggest gains, he said, while hosting countries and cities bear the brunt of the costs.
“They’re sharks,” said Miller, who is managing director of the C40 Centre, an international urban policy think-tank focusing on climate change, public health and the economy. “They really do ensure that every single cost is passed on to the hosts.”

Toronto mayoral candidate Brad Bradford says Sankofa Square was once the epicentre of the city, the “Canadian version” of Times Square and a place where people would celebrate festivals and gather with friends for a night out.
But now, he says it’s become something of a “wasteland.”
“It’s dirty, it’s unsafe. There’s open drug use in the middle of the afternoon. Tourists avoid it. Parents grab their kids by the hand and move quickly through the space, or even worse, they avoid it altogether,” Bradford said during a press conference on Monday as he pitched his plan to revamp and rename the square at the corner of Yonge and Dundas streets.

The report, and the way the data is presented, is dodgy at best, relying only on percentages without also presenting the hard numbers.
What’s worse is how Chow is presenting this as a matter of life and death — you support speed cameras or people dying at the hands of out-of-control motorists.
Toronto hotels say bookings declined during World Cup, experts question economic value
Hosting the World Cup hasn’t exactly been a windfall for Toronto-area hotels.
According to data compiled for the Greater Toronto Hotel Association, the percentage of GTA hotel rooms occupied during the first two weeks of the world’s biggest sporting event is down substantially compared to the same period last year, raising questions about the economic value of hosting.
In the week ending June 13 — which included Canada’s tournament opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina — the overall occupancy rate for area hotels dipped to 82 per cent, down from 83 per cent in the same period last year.
It doesn’t help that Toronto is known as a 3rd World Dumpster Fire.

A new survey shows a close race between incumbent Toronto mayor Olivia Chow and her rival, Brad Bradford, ahead of the election on October 26.
Data from Mainstreet Research revealed that, when undecided voters were removed from the equation, close to 38 per cent of respondents said they would vote for Brad Bradford if the election were today, putting him within six points of Chow’s 43.6 per cent.

Outgoing Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith is considering running for Toronto city council, and has discussed the possibility with Mayor Olivia Chow.
Erskine-Smith has represented the federal riding of Beaches-East York since 2015, but is stepping down when Parliament rises this week. He announced his resignation in May after narrowly losing the nomination for the Ontario Liberals in an upcoming byelection in Scarborough Southwest, a result that dealt a blow to his plans to run for leader of the provincial party.
