Toronto hotels say bookings declined during World Cup, experts question economic value

Hosting the World Cup hasn’t exactly been a windfall for Toronto-area hotels.

According to data compiled for the Greater Toronto Hotel Association, the percentage of GTA hotel rooms occupied during the first two weeks of the world’s biggest sporting event is down substantially compared to the same period last year, raising questions about the economic value of hosting.

In the week ending June 13 — which included Canada’s tournament opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina — the overall occupancy rate for area hotels dipped to 82 per cent, down from 83 per cent in the same period last year.

It doesn’t help that Toronto is known as a 3rd World Dumpster Fire.

Surging Bradford suddenly within reach of Chow for Toronto mayoralty: poll

A new survey shows a close race between incumbent Toronto mayor Olivia Chow and her rival, Brad Bradford, ahead of the election on October 26.

Data from Mainstreet Research revealed that, when undecided voters were removed from the equation, close to 38 per cent of respondents said they would vote for Brad Bradford if the election were today, putting him within six points of Chow’s 43.6 per cent.

Outgoing Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith is considering running for Toronto city council, and has discussed the possibility with Mayor Olivia Chow.

Erskine-Smith has represented the federal riding of Beaches-East York since 2015, but is stepping down when Parliament rises this week. He announced his resignation in May after narrowly losing the nomination for the Ontario Liberals in an upcoming byelection in Scarborough Southwest, a result that dealt a blow to his plans to run for leader of the provincial party.

Vancouver, Toronto hotels less than half full ahead of World Cup matches

VANCOUVER – Noah Reitman regularly rents out the top floor of his Vancouver home through Airbnb, and he, like many in Vancouver, figured demand during the World Cup would be off the charts.

“We thought, ‘oh, this will be a great opportunity for sure to make some extra cash,’” Reitman said.

But after initially significantly raising his asking price, Reitman dropped it back down, and most of his June bookings, he says, have nothing to do with soccer.

I can only speak to experience of Toronto as I live here.

TO is dirty, expensive with dicey public transit and normalized traffic chaos.

Mass immigration gives this decaying city a fetid 3rd World vibe.

That makes Toronto a perfect venue for the scam they call the World Cup, they deserve each other.

Toronto man Shafik Al Jawhari charged after allegedly threatening people he ‘perceived to be Palestinian’: police

A 32-year-old man from Toronto is facing several charges in connection with a hate-motivated threatening incident in Scarborough over the weekend.

Shafik Al Jawhari, 32, of Toronto, was subsequently arrested and charged with one count each of assault with a weapon, weapons dangerous, and fail to comply probation order as well as two counts of uttering threats to cause death. The charges have not been proven in court.

Scalpers drive up ticket prices for any event, and the city has been acting as a scalper for the last year when it comes to the World Cup.

The city used to be compared to the guy you wanted your daughter to date: Clean and safe. We may have been a tad boring, but everyone loved us. We were polite. Not anymore. Toronto’s become the filthy, dangerous place where you can’t even get on a streetcar or subway without finding someone doing drugs or sleeping off a hangover across three seats. No one cares and no one bothers to do anything about it, least of all Mayor Olivia Chow. My property taxes have gone up more than 18% since she became mayor. And the city is a dump.

The election is still months away, but already the battle lines are drawn. On one side, we have Mayor Olivia Chow — a tough and tested lefty — on the other, Councillor Brad Bradford — an aggressive “pragmatist.” Though other contenders may yet join the race, it’s doubtful any will have a genuine shot at victory.

Chow, of course, has been mayor since winning the byelection called in 2023 after the sudden resignation of her predecessor, John Tory, following a sex scandal. A veteran NDPer, she did time as a downtown councillor and a federal parliamentarian before assuming Toronto’s top job.

Both suck up to Islamists and from what I am hearing of Bradford he’s no savior.
