An independent Oversight Group on Monday said the Church of England should increase funds earmarked for redressing its historical ties to slavery.
Experts advising the church are calling for funding to rise tenfold, up to 1 billion pounds ($1.27 billion, €1.17 billion).
The Church of England is the mother church of global Anglicanism, which counts some 85 million members around the world.
Religious leaders in Boston have demanded ‘white churches’ give millions of dollars in reparations to the city’s black community.
The activist clergy also called on them to back a push for the City of Boston to pay $15 billion in reparations for its historical role in the slave trade.
The event at Resurrection Lutheran Church was organized by the Boston People’s Reparations Commission, which made the $15 billion demand.

The Church of England has been told to raise £1 billion from wealthy donors for a fund set up to address its links to transatlantic slavery.
In January last year, the Church Commissioners, who handle more than £10 billion of assets for the Church of England, announced the establishment of a £100 million fund to “address past wrongs of slavery”.
The pledge came following the publication of a report which found that much of the institution’s wealth originates from the slave trade.
The backers of California’s reparations efforts said last summer they want their recommendations to “serve as a blueprint for other states, and eventually, the federal government when they perform the critical task of atoning for this nation’s victimization of African Americans.”
So far, they’re making progress toward the goal of funding programs to benefit Black Americans as recompense for the country’s use of slavery between the late 17th and the mid-19th centuries and what supporters of reparations say were subsequent decades of discrimination.
Gosh, and it just seems like it has something for everyone who isn’t white…Asian…Hispanic…you get the drift. But will certainly annoy folks who were looking for a big, fat direct deposit. That doesn’t sound like it’s in the cards right now.

The first time Louis Weathers heard the idea of reparations for black Americans, he did not take it seriously. “We were supposed to get forty acres and a mule,” he said. “I thought it was a joke.”
Forty acres and a mule was the promise made by General William Sherman in 1865 to the generation freed by the Civil War from slavery. It was not fulfilled.
Weathers is old enough to have known a member of that generation in his own family. “My great-grandfather was enslaved,” he said. He met the man, as a child. Still, he thought the idea of reparations was fanciful, even as it gained broader support on the left and became part of the fraught conversation about race in the United States.

Guyana’s president asks European slave traders’ descendants to pay reparation
The president of Guyana has called on descendants of European slave traders to offer to pay reparations to right historical wrongs.
Irfaan Ali also demanded that those involved in the transatlantic slave trade and African enslavement be posthumously charged for crimes against humanity.
The South American leader’s comments come in advance of Friday’s official apology by the descendants of Scottish 19th-century sugar and coffee plantation owner John Gladstone, father of four-time prime minister William Gladstone.
