Trudeau acknowledges Liberal caucus divide over Israel-Hamas war. Says differences are ‘a source of strength’

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday that MPs, including from his own caucus, are reflecting “very real fears and concerns” amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, but called on them to remind Canadians that diversity is a “source of strength.”

An American mother and daughter became the first hostages to be freed by Hamas on Friday night in “a sign of goodwill”.

They were identified by the Israeli military as Judith Raanan, who is believed to be in her 60s, and her 17-year-old daughter Natalie, who were visiting family living in a Kibbutz close to the Gaza Strip when Hamas attacked.

Yazmeen Deyhimi, who the organization Stop Antisemitism identified as one of two New York University students caught on video tearing down flyers depicting the faces of people Hamas kidnapped to the Gaza Strip, began volunteering for the Anti-Defamation League when she was just a freshman in high school. While still a young teen, she “took part in the ADL Peer Training Program,” according to a short biography of Deyhimi included in the ADL of New York and New Jersey’s announcement of its 2019 high school summer intern class. “She quickly joined the No Place for Hate Committee and has been committed to help facilitate events such as Unity and Equality Days,” the blurb continued.

The function of the police, one might have thought, was to protect the weak against the overbearing and the bullying. Unfortunately, a by-product of the Gaza crisis has been to suggest that, at least on the streets of London, a bit of carefully targeted thuggery against your political opponents can pay useful dividends.

For some days now, the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) has been raising awareness of the plight of abducted Israelis in Gaza by driving display vans around iconic parts of London. These vans are fitted with electronic billboards on the sides and back containing the names of children taken by Hamas from Israel a couple of weeks ago, and still holed up (assuming they are alive) in the Gaza Strip.

If Americans do not have good background history, or very good intuition and common sense, it is increasingly difficult to cognitively negotiate the mainstream media war ‘news’ since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

Our gut tells us that we must sort this one out, quickly. Concurrently, our decision-making as a free people is being hijacked by the leftist Democrats’ neurotic permaglue in massing to support the indefensible, e.g., the horror of Hamas (this leftist germinally fascistic stance that might also serve them well, briefly, as ‘socialists’).

Putting these phenomenally purblind Democrats aside, let’s look at what happened this week in Palestine.

In a field close to the Gaza border a young female conscript is preparing for action.

Just a fortnight ago she was working in an advertising agency in Tel Aviv, now she is heading for the hell that is Gaza – and its Hamas terrorists.

‘It’s pretty different from what I was doing two weeks ago, that’s for sure. But everything changed on October 7,’ she said, referring to the slaughter of 1,400 of her fellow citizens by Hamas. ‘This is our fight for survival. We are trained for this and we will win.’

Israel does not intend to occupy Gaza after troops oust Hamas from the enclave, it emerged on Friday, as troops and tanks prepared for a ground invasion.

Israel plans to instead transfer control to the Palestinian Authority, officials have said.

This week, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, told both Rishi Sunak and Joe Biden that Israel did not want to control the besieged strip following an expected ground offensive to wipe out Hamas’s leadership and infrastructure.

Canada ‘firm and steadfast’ in call for two-state solution for Israel, Palestinians

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada remains committed to a two-state solution to the escalating Arab-Israeli conflict, while acknowledging divergent views, and common fears, among his Liberal MPs on the Israel-Hamas war.

“Canada remains firm and steadfast in our commitment to a two-state solution. The world and the region need a peaceful, safe, prosperous, viable Palestinian state alongside a peaceful, prosperous, democratic, safe Israeli state — Israel,” he said.

More than 30 MPs — 23 of them Liberals — have written a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calling on him to advocate for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

“Canada has long been a voice for peace. The longer this conflict goes on, the more innocent civilians will pay with their lives. We demand that Canada join the growing international call for an immediate ceasefire. Canada must act before more innocent children are killed,” says the letter, signed by 33 MPs.

The signatories include former cabinet minister Omar Alghabra and six current parliamentary secretaries. Eight NDP MPs, including House Leader Peter Julian, and both Green Party MPs also added their names to the list.

For years, left-wing intellectuals have treated “intersectionality” as an inevitability. The social theory, which holds that all oppressed peoples must join together to overthrow their common oppressor, has been an essential strategy of the Left.

There is some truth to this theory. When the fortunes of the Left are rising, intersectionality seems like a juggernaut: identity groups get aggregated into the mass, internal conflicts are subordinated to the cause of liberation, and a policy of “no enemies to the left” shifts political life in favor of the radicals. But the aura of inevitability surrounding the intersectional coalition is an illusion; moments of crisis can bring suppressed contradictions to the surface and begin a process of fragmentation.
