A B.C. nurse accused of making numerous “derogatory and discriminatory” public statements about transgender people took the stand in her discipline hearing on Friday, telling the panel considering her case that she is not transphobic.

During a hearing at the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives, Amy Hamm of New Westminster testified that her advocacy on social and other platforms is meant to protect women and children from what she described as dangerous infringements into sex-segregated spaces.

“I’m not transphobic. I don’t have any issue with trans people — it’s the infringement on women and children’s rights,” Hamm told the college disciplinary panel.

The legal team for a B.C. nurse facing potential discipline over her public statements about transgender people is arguing that a controversial psychologist should be allowed to give expert evidence suggesting there is social value and scientific truth in her opinions.

Amy Hamm’s lawyer argued Wednesday that Toronto psychologist James Cantor’s evidence is necessary to counter the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives’ contention that Hamm has committed unprofessional conduct.

“He can dispel the myth that Amy Hamm’s opinions … will lead to actual harm to transgender people or deter them from seeking medical care,” lawyer Karen Bastow said Wednesday during a hearing on whether Cantor should be qualified as an expert witness.

Andrew Miller, a paedophile who abducted a girl and subjected her to a series of sexual assaults over more than 24 hours, has been jailed for 20 years at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Miller, 53, who is also known as Amy George, admitted abducting and repeatedly abusing the primary school-aged child.
