OTTAWA — High or low, no matter what number Alberta voters cast for the cause of a united Canada on Oct. 19, the stakes are high for the country and the challenges ahead will remain for Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Born just on the other side of the Alberta border in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and raised in Edmonton, Carney has crafted a political persona as a Western Canadian.
Not the cattle herder or wheat farmer kind. Not a cowboy. Not an oilpatch driller. More the high-flyer business investor kind. Comfortable in C-suites anywhere. A fervent Oilers fan, sure. But less “Redmonton” than Calgary cool, able to assess risk and, above all, to manage it.
