Preliminary numbers released by Ottawa earlier this year showed that Canada’s population was dropping for the first time since Confederation – but there was a small problem. The numbers weren’t accurate. When Statistics Canada released revised numbers last week, it showed that Canada’s population had actually increased in early 2026.
The shifting population numbers aren’t just a rounding error of interest to economists – they have big implications for assessing economic growth and immigration policy. The recent revision shows that Ottawa still doesn’t have a good handle on who is in the country. While the revisions are welcome, more needs to be done so the federal government can provide timely and accurate population information.
