There will be kind words for Ukraine and condemnations of Russia when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travels through Canada over the next two days.
But there is a more consequential reason for his visit, which will include a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet in Banff on Thursday, as well as stops in Calgary, Toronto and North Bay.
Ottawa and Kyiv are in talks toward a formal agreement that would lock in Canada’s military, political, economic and financial support for Ukraine over the long term.
Long term, meaning one hundred years.
