There have never been so many referrals to Prevent, the Government’s counter-radicalization program. According to Home Office figures published this week, there were 10,293 referrals in the year to September 2025, up 39% on the previous year. Extremism, it seems, is surging. There is just one problem with that neat conclusion: referrals are not diagnoses. They are concerns passed on to the system.
