The rising social disorder and crime of the 1970s and 1980s drove out not only hundreds of thousands of residents from New York City, but also many businesses. Within a few years, entire communities lacked basic amenities like supermarkets and drugstores; empty storefronts littered shopping districts. That started to change only when crime began falling in the 1990s and neighborhoods rebounded—first in New York and then in other big cities—prompting national retailers to begin setting up shop in places that they had once avoided. Thousands of stores and tens of thousands of jobs blossomed in New York alone thanks to this retail revival. But those gains are vanishing before our eyes as rising retail theft is driving a new era of closings.

Out in San Francisco, things have not been going well at the massive Westfield Mall, to put it mildly. As with most of the rest of the city – and all of California’s larger cities, really – conditions have become untenable for most retailers. Rampant retail theft and filthy conditions have made the mall far less safe and have driven away potential shoppers, causing sales to sag. One of the few larger stores that haven’t thrown in the towel yet is American Eagle Outfitters, the iconic clothing shop.

ABC 7 / Chicago Sun-Times reported the weekend’s first fatal shooting occurred around 10:40 p.m. Friday at an apartment complex “in the 8000 block of South Hermitage Avenue.” A 44-year-old man was shot in the back and found in a hallway. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.
Democratic Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson this week blamed racism for criticism of the job he’s done in the first months of his administration.
“There is a different standard that I’m held to. There is,” Johnson said Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. “And that’s not something that I’m mad at, but that’s just the reality. I’m not the first person of color, particularly a Black man, that will be held to a different standard than other administrations.”

Brandon Johnson has reached the 100-day mark as mayor of Chicago. His actions and statements in that time suggest that the city will face continued decline. He remains beholden to the group most responsible for his election: the Chicago Teachers Union. And when it comes to the twin dangers shadowing Chicago’s future—crime and fiscal irresponsibility—he has set the stage to make them even worse.
This is Toronto’s fate.
Misogyny is supposedly rampant in modern society, but where, exactly, does it lurk? For decades, researchers have hunted for evidence of overt discrimination against women as well as subtler varieties, like “systemic sexism” or “implicit bias.” But instead of detecting misogyny, they keep spotting something else.
To paraphrase the Jefferson Airplane, it’s no secret that the San Francisco Bay Area with all its failure to enforce basic law and order is taking the short road to becoming the next Detroit.
But why stop at Detroit when you can become the next Somalia?

Local activists sought to show the ‘positive’ side of the city. Here’s what they saw instead
About ten years on from the first appearance of a San Francisco “poop map,” which documented human waste incidents on the city’s streets, the Bay Area gem is struggling more than ever. It boasts a 25.7 percent office vacancy rate, nearly ten percentage points higher than the average rate across the United States. The city’s population fell significantly during the pandemic. Property crime rates are the highest of any city in the country. The streets are filled with homeless encampments that foster grime, drug abuse, sexual assault and violence. Just a few days ago, fashion retailer Nordstrom closed its five-level store in San Francisco after thirty-five years of business. The store had been a fixture of the city’s downtown area.

Oakland, Calif., is plagued by crime—and by a district attorney, Pamela Price, determined to divide people by race.
After “antiracist” consultant Karen Fleshman finished a training in Oakland, Calif., she took to Facebook to express pride in her work: “Great afternoon training Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price’s Victim Services team in ‘How to Serve White Victims.’ Madam DA Pamela Price is my shero [sic] and mentor. She is a lifelong warrior for justice with compassion.” A few days later, Ms. Price thanked Ms. Fleshman for her “wisdom and support.”
But when I started asking questions about the June 26 training, suddenly trainer and trainee didn’t want to talk about it. Ms. Fleshman didn’t respond to my queries. Neither did the head of the district attorney’s Victim Services Division, Kristina Molina. Ms. Price’s press officer, Patti Lee, told me that she deals with the press, whereas I, as a think-tank employee, have a “specific point of view.”

San Francisco’s once-trendy downtown area has descended into a drug-addled hellscape — where addicts regularly overdose in city-funded “dens of death.”
Historic hotels in the Tenderloin neighborhood — which used to be the City by the Bay’s premier entertainment district — are now the face of the progressive California city’s deterioration.
Around 20,000 rooms in about 500 hotels have been converted from coveted tourist destinations into roach- and vermin-infested “Single-Room Occupancy” (SRO) housing for vagrants.
Just think Toronto will soon be a progressive paradise just like San Francisco.
