A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation previously said Mauricio Garcia, 33, who was killed after being engaged by a police officer in the Saturday incident in Allen, Texas, served in the military for a brief period but was expelled for mental health reasons, CNN reported. Officials confirmed Monday that Garcia had been “terminated” from the Army.

Instead of the usual ‘leave your name and number,’ mall shooter Mauricio Garcia’s personalized message asks his parents for money, and insists to his provider that his cell phone bill is already paid.
It also includes a dig at the federal government for not providing him with enough financial aid, as well as a jab at the deceased Dallas resident’s friends if they owed him money.
ALLEN, Texas (AP) — The assailant who killed eight people at a Texas outlet mall was identified by authorities Sunday as a 33-year-old man who had been staying at a nearby motel.
Three law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press named the gunman as Mauricio Garcia, who was fatally shot by a police officer who happened to be near the suburban Dallas mall. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss details of an ongoing investigation.
One of the officials said investigators have been searching the motel and a home in the Dallas area connected to the suspect.
Eight people were killed and seven wounded by a gunman dressed in black tactical gear who got out of his car at a Texas mall Saturday and opened fire in the parking lot — before being shot dead himself by a police officer at the scene, officials said.
The deadly mass shooting unfolded at 3:36 p.m. at the Allen Premium Outlets — about 30 minutes north of Dallas — when a lone gunman got out of a vehicle and began firing, according to police and footage from the parking lot.
