Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is projected to open to a disastrous $40 million over the four-day Christmas weekend. That is lower than The Marvels, which opened to $46 million over a three-day weekend and is widely considered a five-alarm catastrophe.
In the end, The Marvels only ended up grossing $84 million stateside and another $121 million overseas for a global haul of just $205 million — well, Well, WELL below its production budget.
I became aware of Leave the World Behind, a new film that’s now streaming on Netflix, when Julia Roberts mentioned it a few days ago on the Graham Norton Show, where she co-guested with Cher, Tom Hanks, and Timothée Chalamet. Her sales pitch was impressive. She said that when the producers were casting it, they sent her a copy of the 2020 novel by Rumaan Alam on which it’s based. She dove into it at once, but took a long time getting to the end because it was so terrifying that she had to put it down at sunset.
Disney has spent the last year developing and refining its destructive habit of producing films infected by woke themes — and it’s become surprisingly good at it. The result, of course, has been disastrous for the mega-entertainment company; almost every film Disney sent to theaters this year flopped at the box office.
