Americans don’t want authoritarianism. They don’t want the economic mismanagement that comes with it. They don’t want the corruption. They don’t want their trade policy and their military run on the basis of the insane whims of a single man’s unquenchable vanity. They don’t want masked federal agents on the streets shooting their neighbours. They don’t want to be the victims of the tech lords’ oligarchic manipulations. The midterm results amounted to a radical repudiation of Donald Trump and all he represents. Trumpist candidates, all down the line, bought it. The American left will have a gleeful week. So what.
