Earlier this year, Prime Minister Mark Carney and his government announced — or rather boasted — that they had brought immigration under control after the open-floodgate Trudeau years. In 2025 the national population, they claimed, shrank by 102,000 people, the first decline since Confederation.
The problem is, the claim was untrue.
Rather than shrinking by 102,000, Canada’s population actually rose by 280,000 last year, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada. That’s a shift of 382,000.
