Britain’s facial recognition drive is turning sinister

A day is a long time in immigration enforcement technology. On 4 November, the Guardian and campaign group Liberty reported on new Home Office plans to deploy Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology as part of a massive expansion in immigration enforcement.

Following a trial at the ferry port in Holyhead, where passengers enter the UK from the Republic of Ireland, LFR will now be deployed more widely. Cameras in public places and transport hubs will seek to identify visa-overstayers, as well as those already due for removal — or who were removed once, and are trying to return.
