WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump has made a dizzying array of campaign stops this past week in the run-up to Tuesday’s midterm elections, stumping in Michigan last Sunday before hitting Mississippi, Texas, Ohio, South Carolina, and Florida, with planned stops this weekend in Kansas and Iowa.
While nine rallies in eight days across eight states may seem like normal, last-minute voter outreach, the president’s largely red-state itinerary suggests he’s playing defence. His recent messaging to the Republican base has also signalled that he’s worried about GOP losses.
