US election bets surge, despite red flags and mixed record
The director of the longest-running election betting market in modern US politics used to work in a relatively sleepy field, presiding over what he called a “connoisseurs’ market”, where bets were capped at $500 (£388) and no-one made much money.
But the world Thomas Gruca, a marketing professor at the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business, now operates in has changed dramatically.
In the last few weeks, as the US barrels towards a presidential election that most pundits and polls say is too close to call, a new crop of companies has exploded on to the scene.

An Arizona man was caught chopping down a Trump-Vance campaign sign with a machete after plowing into them with his car.
Authorities are investigating multiple reports of a person wearing a white T-shirt, pizza patterned pants, white slip-ons and a baseball cap vandalizing political signs in the Fortuna Foothills area.
Witnesses reported a man damaging signs near East 40th Street and South Foothills Boulevard by running them over with a vehicle, kicking them over and slashing them with a machete.

Four dead and dozens hurt in Alabama mass shooting
At least four people have been killed and dozens injured in a mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, police say.
“Multiple shooters fired multiple shots on a group of people” late on Saturday in the Five Points South area of the city, Birmingham police officer Truman Fitzgerald said.
Police found the bodies of two men and one woman at the scene and a fourth victim died of bullet wounds in hospital, he said.
Detectives are investigating whether the gunmen walked up to the victims or drove by, Mr Fitzgerald added. No suspects have been arrested.
