According to the abortion-isms of old, women have the “right to choose” what happens to the babies they carry. “Her body, her choice,” they shout. The wild, wild west that is third-party reproduction, however, claims to be an exception to that rule if a contract clause compelling abortion exists.

That’s exactly what happened to single mom surrogate McKenna West, who refused to abort the baby boy she was carrying after the Californians who paid to create him in a lab via in vitro fertilization (IVF) demanded it over the child’s severe, yet treatable, heart condition diagnosis.

Generally speaking, the 20-week anatomy scan is a blast.

You’ve reached the halfway mark, and the baby is usually up and around, looking an awful lot like a tiny human being. This is (typically) the grand moment of a gender reveal, and your daydreams usually take on a distinctly pink or blue aura from this moment onward. As the ultrasound tech busily takes measurements, you watch in awe: sometimes the baby’s thumb drifts upward toward his little mouth, and your heart just kind of melts.

A Canadian couple is suing the surrogate mother who carried their son, two years after she refused their request to abort the fetus because of a cleft lip and possible genetic abnormalities.

The Ontario-based surrogate insisted that more tests be conducted and eventually the same-sex couple agreed to let the pregnancy continue, as specialists indicated he was a healthy child with a relatively minor birth defect.
