The owner of the Swiss ski bar at the centre of a New Year’s Day inferno that claimed 40 lives and left 119 injured spent time in prison for ‘fraud, kidnapping and false imprisonment’ and was a known pimp, it emerged today.
French national Jacques Moretti, who is in his 60s, faces charges for the inferno at Le Constellation, in Crans–Montana, Switzerland, on New Year’s Day.
His venue became a death trap, after sparklers placed inside champagne bottles ignited the basement ceiling.

“I thought my little brother was inside so I came and tried to break the window to help people to exit, and after that I went in.”
The 18-year-old man, who did not want to give his name, was speaking to the BBC after a huge fire at a New Year’s Eve party in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana rapidly turned what was an evening of celebration into a nightmare.
Police say around 40 people died when the blaze broke out in a bar called Le Constellation at around 01:30 local time (00:30 GMT) on Thursday. A further 115 more were injured, mainly with severe burns.

A man who used his car as a “weapon” to plough into more than 130 people at Liverpool FC’s victory parade has been jailed for 21 years and six months.
Paul Doyle, 54, drove at crowds “in a rage” after his “anger had completely taken hold of him” shortly before 18:00 BST on 26 May, Liverpool Crown Court heard.
Judge Andrew Menary KC said the ex-Royal Marine, who stared straight ahead with no expression as he was sentenced, had generated “fear and panic” and his “disregard for human life defied ordinary understanding”.

The death toll from a massive fire that broke out at a residential apartment complex in Hong Kong has risen to 55, as firefighters continued to battle the blaze, among the deadliest in the city’s modern history.

One suspect in train stabbings as rail worker critical
A 32-year-old man is now the only suspect after multiple people were stabbed on a train, police have confirmed.
A railway staff member remains in a life-threatening condition following the attack on a train from Doncaster to London King’s Cross, which stopped in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, shortly before 20:00 GMT on Saturday.
A 35-year-old man, who was arrested at the scene, has been released with no further action after it was reported “in good faith” that he had been involved in the attack. Officers later confirmed this was not the case.

AT TIME of writing, two people have been arrested by police in connection with a horrendous stabbing spree of at least ten passengers on a train last night. At least one of the alleged attackers was first shot with a Taser by police officers.
The arrests, in Huntingdon where the Doncaster to King’s Cross train was brought to an emergency stop, mean that legal proceedings are now active. It is highly likely that charges will follow imminently and the media must be extremely careful not to prejudice subsequent court proceedings.

Passengers travelling from Doncaster to London were attacked in a mass stabbing on a train on Saturday night.
Eleven people were injured and received hospital treatment. Two of them remain in a life-threatening condition.
Two British men in their thirties were arrested and police said there was currently “nothing to suggest” it was a terror incident.
