Anti-Semitism by a pupil “in and of itself” should not warrant a referral to the Prevent programme, according to government guidance for teachers.
The Department for Education (DfE) document, released last month, urges teachers to refer pupils to the anti-extremism scheme only if anti-Jewish beliefs are expressed as part of a “broader extremist world-view”.
Sources close to Lucy Powell, the Education Secretary, insisted it was the correct advice for staff with responsibility for safeguarding in schools, colleges and universities. They said anti-Semitic views on their own were not necessarily a matter for Prevent.
