Reports of the Republican Party’s death have been greatly exaggerated. At least, that’s what Donald Trump hopes.
The US president has had few reasons to be cheerful recently, and the strain has shown in his bad-tempered exchanges with the media. He is currently storming around the country to defend what should be deep-red areas, desperately hoping seats will not be swept away by what looks like a mounting blue wave.
But Mr Trump may yet escape the fate of being consigned to spend the rest of his presidency as a lame duck.
