Riot police have been deployed at Poland’s Constitutional Court amid an escalating stand-off between the government and the court’s top judges.
The row pits the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk against his predecessors from the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS).
The police intervention came after Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek said he had requested stripping the court’s President Bogdan Święczkowski and Vice-President Bartłomiej Sochański of their immunity from prosecution to bring criminal charges against them.
The EU’s @donaldtusk lets the cat out of the bag as to what today’s coup d’etat in Poland 🇵🇱 is all about. He was speaking yesterday.
"I will not allow the right wing to take us out of the European Union. That’s what the game is about today."

🇵🇱 BREAKING FROM POLAND! Right now, Poles are singing “Rota,” a historic Polish patriotic anthem, outside the Constitutional Tribunal. Their voices rise into the cold night: “So help us God!”!
The message to Tusk is unmistakable: Never underestimate the Polish spirit of freedom. It runs deep in our nation’s DNA.— Marcin Czapliński (@czaplinskiii) October 30, 2026
