The US and Israeli military conflict with Iran, which began on February 28 and does not appear to have come to an end, was a complete failure for both the United States and Israel. If this has not yet been recognized by everyone because the current US administration needs to portray itself as victorious for the midterm elections, it is nevertheless important to see this reality.
Iran’s Islamist regime has not been in power by accident for nearly 50 years. The regime is already laying the groundwork for conditions that will make the world far more perilous after President Donald Trump’s term of office ends.
U.S. Central Command (Centcom) on Saturday conducted strikes on several Iranian crude oil carriers in response to “multiple unprovoked” Iranian attacks on two U.S. Navy warships, according to the military command.
The U.S. military “permanently disabled” three of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s (IRGC) crude oil carriers located near Kharg Island and in the Gulf of Oman. No U.S. service members were harmed during the Iranian attacks, according to Centcom.

The prospect of an imminent agreement to end the conflict between the US and Iran again seems unlikely, with the warring sides exchanging strikes and uncompromising rhetoric.
The attacks come days after the US said it was moving into a new phase – a sweeping economic blockade against Iran and countries which trade with it.
The US aim was to force Iran to negotiate and to stop its attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The key commercial shipping route has been effectively closed since the US and Israel started the conflict in February.
Military superiority rarely decides wars against regimes that measure victory by survival. The Islamic Republic of Iran, since its Islamic Revolution in 1979, has been refining this distinction.
By the first week of April, Iran was losing. Its naval fleet was on the seabed, its aircraft grounded, and American and Israeli aircraft were operating in Iranian skies unopposed. Washington then began granting extensions. Five months later, the Iranian regime is still setting conditions rather than receiving them.
Russia hasn’t yet killed large numbers of Europeans outside Ukraine, but it’s getting closer. The night of 4-5 August, an airport bus driver discovered an armed drone lying near the tarmac of the Leipzig-Halle airport, which is a central hub of Europe’s logistical support to Ukraine’s war effort. A cargo jet, meanwhile, may have struck a second drone shortly after takeoff, forcing an abrupt landing, and investigators found a third drone laden with military explosives nearby.
In 2024, incendiary devices hidden in parcels ignited in DHL cargo at the same airport. Had these detonated in the air, a major air catastrophe and large-scale civilian casualties would have ensued, probably resulting in a broader war.

US forces have struck two Iranian launchers on Iran’s Larak island, a US official said, marking the first known American strikes on Iran since late July.
“Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into Strait of Hormuz,” the BBC’s US partner CBS News quoted US Central Command (Centcom) spokesman Cdr Tim Hawkins as saying.
The IRGC said Sunday’s attack killed and wounded several people, and vowed “response and punishment”. It later said it had launched an attack on US military targets in Jordan, according to Iranian state media.
For anyone who has ever harbored doubts—and for those who still do—that Iran’s regime stands against humanity, peace, and the basic norms of civilization, the latest remarks from hard-line Iranian cleric Mohammad Bagher Kharrazi — secretary-general of Iran’s proxy, Hezbollah, and closely tied to the current Supreme Leader — should be impossible to ignore. “The only way to save the country… is building an atomic bomb and firing it,” Kharrazi recently declared, “no other way is left for us…. We should create a tsunami whose waves hit the American coasts”.

Good question. The answer seems to be less that ships veered away from mines and more that Tehran was largely bluffing with the mine threat, but the details — once again — veer straight into absurdity.
