Deadly fire at CFB Wainwright started in nearby grenade launcher range, was deemed not a threat, military officials say

OTTAWA — The deadly fire at CFB Wainwright started due to military training on a grenade launcher range and was allowed to keep burning because it was impossible to reach and deemed not to be a threat, Canadian Armed Forces officials said Thursday.

Several investigations are now ongoing to figure out exactly what happened in the incident last Saturday that killed four soldiers and injured dozens more, with 13 still in “critical” condition and 14 others requiring serious care at hospitals in Alberta, according to military and health officials.
